I would say that the B-29 was the first aluminium cloud. I believe the C-5 holds that title right now.

Chasing the ultimate build.

The B-17, B-24, and B-29 are from the mid Seventies and are all 1/48.  The B-36 is 1/72.  Mine came with Shep Paine's diorama guide and the decals for Enola Gay and Bock's Car.  Never finished mine, don't know where it went.  One thing I do know is you're going to need weight, and lots of it. I look forward to your build.

I wish that Monogram would indicat how much weight is needed and where to put it. I just finished a  Hasegawa F-86 and the instructions indicated how much weight was needed to prevent a tail sitter.

If I remember right, you've got a lot of room in the nacelles.  I've seen people glue a short 1/2 inch nut and bolt in each nacelle.  There is room under cockpit, but not enough to keep her from sitting on her tail.  There used to be a guy that sold nose weights for various kits, but I haven't seen him in years. You'll have to get creative.

I'll be following this one for sure.  I put this kit together back in the 80s when I was a kid then hung it from my ceiling.

I first built this kit in the late 1950's when I was about 10 years. I think that it was manufactured as a "box scale" model. "Box scale" means that the model was manufactured to fit into a box of a certain size. I think that Monogram also made their B-17, B-24 and B-36 as "box scale" models. Can anyone verify this?

Monogram did very few odd scale kits.  Exceptions were the Air Power set, and subsets of that sold.  Other than that, here is a page from the 1969 catalog that had what I think is the limit of off scale for Monogram.  Revell did a lot of box scale kits and they included the B-24, B-25, B-29, B-36, B-47, and B-52, but no B-17.

I've got one of these in my stash along with the B-36.  Already learned something:  I didnt know there was an upgrade set for it.

Saw Boxcar in Dayton.  Beautiful airplane.  Looking forward to your build!

Eduard makes a number of photo-etched upgrades for the B-29. They make two kits for the interior: FE616-$16.96, and FE49616-$45.00. The FE6916 has parts for areas of the model that will never be seen once the model is finished. Remember, the only interior areas of the finished model that can be seen is the cockpit. I used upgrade kit FE616 which includes parts for the cockpit.

That's a nice kit. When did you buy it and for how much?

I bought the B-29 at Hobby Lobby last year. I do not recall how much I paid, but I did use my 40% off coupon.Smile

This sounds like an endevour especially on this classic kit.  I'll be following as I know, with your skills, you'll be able turn this build into a marvelous piece of art.

It's about time that I build the Silver Beast!!! (Revell B-29)
Posted by JohnnyK on Thursday, April 20, 2017 3:31 PM

No, I'm not going to build King Kong. I am going to build the Silver Beast that he is holding in his hand, Revell's 1/48 scale B-29. This is a big model with some big problems. In order to appreciate the size of the model, the following photo compares a P-47 and the Beast. The wingspan of the Beast is 36". Now that's big!

The Beast comes in a Big Box.

Since this is a big model, it will need some extra detailing and some "bling".  The cockpit is going to be dressed up with Eduard's upgrade kit and the stock wheels/tires will be replaced with resin wheels/tires. I'll add metal fuel lines to the engines and metal brake lines to the landing gear for some extra "bling". The fuselage and wings will not be painted, instead they will be finished in Bare Metal Foil Surprise I figure that I'll need 6 to 7 sheets of foil. Finally, rivets will be added to the wings and fuselage.
