Monogram - B - 29s

Hi ;

   I have built a few with many good results . What I am wondering is ,How much is an older 1/48 ship worth ? I know it's had a couple of box art changes .

   I saw one at our recent Train Show go for 80.00 bucks . I also saw one today with different box art .( first one had the plane flying left to right .) this one had the plane angling right toward the viewer . The Price ? 65.00 bucks .

 Now , being as how it's been re-released a couple of times . How much is it actually worth ?  I have five parts bins full of the interiors from these planes . I am just curious as I might like to build another

 This one would be built with my atypical " windows " following the actual curves of the aircraft . Does anyone know what a fair price for an older one in a pristine box would be worth ?    T.B.

What is a kit worth?  Ultimately what someone will pay for it.  Cliche, yes, but it's the truth.  If you can find a copy of John Burns's price guide, that's a good place to start.  However, it is somewhat dated, and out of print.  There are collector sites such as Gasoline Alley, but their prices tend to be on the high side.  I'd look at the prices (starting and ending) on eBay and find a happy medium.  It also depends on where you're selling.  eBay seems to bring higher prices than model contests.  Good luck.

When it was out last, up til 2014, it was sold in Hobby Lobby for a few dollars north of what the B-17 kit still sells for there now. They came back out with it last year with atomic bomber parts added back in (that was available in the 1980s release) for that huge price hike. Considering the condition that many of their molds have lapsed into, I find it hard to justify paying that much.

B-29 1:48 are hard to find now, at least on Japanese sites. So I think $65 is not too much to pay.

Model Manic is right about the cost.  On eBay you'll find them in the $65.00-$75.00 range.  These will be your numbers to decide on.

eBay....find one of the early releases when molds were new. You can tell by the box art.

 "Can you fly this plane and land it?...Surely you can't be serious....I am serious, and don't call me Shirley"

TB,

I think your best bet is a model show.  I saw one a couple of months ago for around $35.00.  Someone is always cleaning out their stash.  The problem with EBay is always shipping, which tends to be rather high usually.

I think people just buy them at model shows and then put them up on EBay for twice the price.

I went to Hobby Lobby today and the B-29 kit was no longer there.

Scalehobbyiest.com has the kit for $63.95, with shipping added on the total is $73.95.  I remember picking up the kit back in 2008 (85-5711) from my local Hobbylobby for around $40.00.  When revell re-released the kit a year ago the price really jumped up.  As far as I know the 85-5718 kit is identical to 85-5711, just a new decal sheet.
