Great job on this, your Jug builds are inspiring me to do my Tamiya 1/48 Jug, but in PTO markings

Another build to try to emulate.

I don't understand how you are able to knock these kits off so quickly and so well ... but I'm grateful for all the reference material when I get around to building some of the same kits from my stash.

Outstanding work as always!

As for the aerial wire, I thought ETO birds used radios that didn't require them.

I did come across some very early ones that may have been ETO with wires, but generally I see them on PTO birds, especially with later ones and Mustangs.

Hunter

I believe it is time that Aaron, and FSM step up and have you start doing aircraft builds and "how to's" for the magazine. How about it Aaron?

Thanks guys,

Hunter, I think the forum honchos only come in here when people start bickering.....lol.  Fortunately most of those folks are gone.  If they contact me, I'd gladly whip something up.  It wouldn't be hard to find me.

Another suberb build.  Thanks for the trip.  I think your use of masks may become a trend on this site.  You just can't argue with the results.  Fantastic.

Also, thanks for the Has vs. Tamiya kit comparison.

You seemed to truly enjoy building the Tamiya Jug.  It really shows as your build and especially your weathering is exceptional.

On that note, I'm done with this project.  What can I say about the Tamiya Jug.  It's pure modeling bliss in every sense.  I'm good for several a year.  I added PE seatbelts and Ultracast wheels.  The markings are from an old Superscale sheet and they performed great as usual.  Inisgnias were painted on. I added a 75 gallon belly tank from a Hasegawa P-51, as these smaller tanks were more common at the time. I could have used the 108 paper tank but I hate them.  I still have to add the aerial wire, I will eventually.

Thanks for following...

Johnny1000

When are you going to do his B17?

Thanks guys..

Johnny, I did build the B-17 he flew 11 missions on, which was also the plane he was shot down in during the Munster Raid.  It was a B-17F named "Cash and Carrie" #425915, built by Lockheed Vega.  I built it many years ago by heavily modifying the Monogram G kit.   It unfortunately did not survive a fall from a shelf (hence the reason I don't build large things anymore), but I still have the carcass. I was still rather new to modeling when I built it so it didn't turn out that great tobegin with.  I had custom decals made of the noseart and I still have plenty more. I'll have another crack at it someday.

Here's a few pics (sorry, pics are old)...

Your pre-shading looks fantastic, I wish I could get mine to look ten percent as good!

And the engine ain't half bad either!

Beautiful Joe. I did enjoy the story about your grandfather. I always think of that game 6 Degrees of Separation when I hear stories like yours. It's amazing to think of just how incredibly connected we all are somehow. =]

Indeed, it's a small world.

Curious about the different sized markings on the underside of the wings.

Thanks all,

Keavdog, I think it's for the same reason as for the white stripes and cowl, so that could be readily identified in combat. Probably why it's huge.

If I can answer for Joe - the tape goes over the areas where the masks butt up against each other. I used them on a Spitfire, and if you think of the wing roundel (two colors), I painted the blue outline first, then laid down the mask and sprayed the center red. I then  put down the mask over the center, but as they're vinyl, they can be tweaked a little, and the seal might not be perfect, so I put tape where the red mask met the blue one, and then sprayed the rest of the plane. The tape is just to prevent some of that other color falling between the joints on the masks, and you leave the outer edges alone.

-BD-

Thanks for the tip.  I will definitely do it that way when I get to the masks.

Beautiful work. The OD and the neutral gray, especially, look awesome. Thanks for the great story and photos as well.
