WIP: 1/48 Airfix Spitfire Mk IIa
Posted by RadMax8 on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 11:12 PM

Hello all,

I’m working on a kit to get my skills back, seeing how it’s been about six years since I was in my modeling prime, and two years since I’ve had any bench time. I decided on a cheap kit which has a lot of learning potential, the old Airfix 1/48 Spitfire MkI kit. I’ll be building it as a MkIIa, and I’ll be building it OOTB. I want to focus on trying some new techniquest and products in regards to painting and seam work. Enough jabbering, on to the pics.

Instrument Panel

I know everything isn’t accurate, but it’s an old kit and I’m trying to get my *** back! Hope you guys enjoy.

Thanks all. It’s starting to slowly come back to me.

Got a little work done this week. Buttoned up the fuselage, glued the wings together, dipped the canopy in Future. More pics when I get the wings glued on the fuselage.

Slow progress, but hey it looks like an airplane! Next up is filling seams and gluing the canopy on, followed by masking the wheel wells and radiators.

I'd say you were away from the bench for 6 minutes...not 6 years. Looks great

Hey guys, remember me? Well, I’ve got a little bit of work done. Here’s the progress:

Painted the bottom with Sky Type S over a black base. I think it turned out nicely.

Here’s the Dark Green and the beginning of some masking. Snakes on a plane! (Woof. Bad joke!)

Painted the Dark Earth. I had a little too much faith in my airbrushing ability. I chose not to mask other than the snakes. As you can see, that was an error on my part. Overspray everywhere! Now to fix it...

Ok, that’s a little better. I’m thinking the clear coats should help level things out a bit.

Here’s the demaraction line. Not too shabby!!

Let me know what you think.

Thanks, all.

Big Smile Snakes on a plane.    Looking good Mate. I see that you get "snake tracks " on your camo like I do. i eliminated that by using a clear flat testor's over each color. tedious but necessary

Jay jay,

How does the flat coat prevent the overspray from sticking to the other color? I may have to try this on my next RAF build...

No,no. It's not the overspray, it's the tonal differance that appears under the poster tack snakes. The poster tack itself ,at least in my case , reacts somehow with the first camo color laid down and leaves an unwanted, slightly different color where the poster tack comes in contact with the paint your trying to mask.  So you can eliminate that "snake line" by clear coating after each color. Phew that's kind hard to explain.

Ok, now I understand what you're saying. I might have had a little bit of that, but most of my problems came from overspray. I'll definitely clear coat next time. I just got so excited...

Thanks, Jay Jay!

That looks great Max. I use the same technique. Snakes have no arms that's why they don't wear vests.

Thanks for stopping by! That’s quite the knee slapper you’ve got there...

How do you mas between your snakes? Or do you bother?

I did some work this weekend! Woohoo! I painted the light blue on the prop spinner and fuselage stripe. I had some paint pull up where I masked under the stabs... likely due to me not washing the plastic before beginning assembly. Lesson learned. I also began putting the crappy kit decals on. This being a cheap refresher kit I’m not really too worried. Here’s a picture. Not the wrinkles are due to decal solvent. I’m hoping by morning it’ll be in good shape.

That Spit is really looking the part! AND I learned something by following your build to, what a perk. Will have to try that flat clear technique.

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

You’re almost at the finish line now! So close!

Which paints did you use for the camo colors?

Hey stik,

The Sky Type S is Model Master enamel, and the top colors are Mission Models acrylics. I really really like the acrylics. The amount of control and just the general behavior of the paint was excellent. It will really shine on my Luftwaffe subjects (why yes, I did buy the entire line of RLM colors...)

Hope this helps! Ideally, I’ll have this finished by Sunday. Fingers crossed...

Wow! She looks awesome. Great job. When I do my camo with the sticky tack, I just use large pieces of the stuff shaped and molded to the shape of the camo. I find this eliminates the snake edges.

Max, it looks real good. Why the Sunday deadline?

No real deadline, just want to get it off the bench, and focus on the next bird, that’s all! So many kits, so little time.

This was really just a quick, cheap kit to get back into things, but the horrific Airfix decals sort of derailed me. Anyway, don’t know if I will have it done, but I like to set goals.

The overall fit and finish look great! I have one of these in the stash, I might need to have a go at it.

This is the old Airfix kit, not the new one. Definitely had to do some filling to get where it is!

Well, life got in the way and I couldn’t finish this weekend. That’s ok, just keep plugging away!
