Completed P-40N...
Posted by fotofrank on Friday, November 3, 2017 1:24 PM

This is a P-40N assigned to Peterson Field, near Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1945. My dad was assigned to Peterson from January to September 1945, for B-29 transition training. While he was there he did get some P-40 stick-time. The flight logs that I have do not indicate a tail number for the P-40 he flew so I had to find a photo of P-40's at Peterson from that time. The picture I found was like 2 x 3 inches, that I enlarged in Photoshop. Anyway, this model depicts a P-40 that my dad may have flown. Of all the pictures I have of my dad while he was serving in the AAC, not one of those pictures is of him with an airplane!

This was a tough build to finish. The airplane was damaged and repaired several times while I was detailing/weathering the model. I like the AMT kits and I have four more AMT P-40 kits in my stash. One of those will be a Merlin powered P-40F/L of the 332 FG, Italy, 1944. My only complaint about the kits is that the main landing gear attach points can be very delicate. I still need to figure how to strengthen them before one breaks again and I lose it. BTW: The wheels are correct. The P-40N used the same wheels as the P-51. I have a resin pair of wheels for another P-40N build in the future.

Thank you all for your posts. I don't have any pictures of the actual build, just the finished model. Sorry.

I tried to weather the model with artist oils and during that process it was damaged a few times. The pitot tube is lost is a vast sea of dark blue carpet, one landing gear leg repaired and one horizontal stabilizer re-attached during the weathering process. Whew!

This is the picture I worked from:

Very nice!  Looks like you got your canopy masking down.  If you can, bring it to build day.  I would love to see it in person.

very nice you made a all green p-40 look interesting. is the prop hub chromate yellow? not to imply that p-40 is not interesting I have at least a dozen on my stash. I recently did the all black 1 with red on it from 325th FG checker tails.

Well, Blackdog, this P-40 is typical of stateside aircraft. Simply O.D. and gray. I'm guessing the spinner is insignia yellow like the numbers on the tail. The number D35 below the cockpit might also be yellow but I made them white like the number 35 on the nose.

Nice work dog. Those AMT/AMtech kits are no walk in the park from what I hear. You may want to try Hasegawa’s N someday. It’s a great kit and beautifully detailed right out of the box. We desperately need a new tooled F/L that you don’t need to add a resin nose to. Thanks for sharing.
