Taproom 307 Mig Killer
Posted by plasticjunkie on Sunday, November 19, 2017 9:46 PM

I just completed this comission of Taproom 307, F-4B from the USS Constellation that became a Mig killer on 10-26-67.

The model is the excellent 1/48 Academy F-4 and was a joy to build and detail. The kit seats were replaced with resin ones that have more details. The markings are from  Bravo Mig Killers by Furball #48-011 sheet. Paints are MM enamels, Tamiya acrylics and Alclad metallic paints. Weathering was done by using the marbling technique, Flory Washes  and artist's oil paints for streaks.

Stunning job there PJ, that office is superb.

I do have a question. I am gearing up for the new Airfix Phantom at the end of the month with a plan to build it next year, and was tring to work out the colours to use on the bare metal section of the horizontal tail, especially the darker strip in the middle. What colour did you use on that?

Hey thanks a ton gents for the nice comments.

Hi Bish

For the horizontal stab NMF colors I used aluminum and center strip I used Steel which is darker as per the reference photos.

Which F-4 will you be doing? A US or Brit one? I'm planning on a Brit one next time from Hasegawa. (FGR.2)

Thanks, i guessed alum for the outer section, but was not sure for the darker one. Was trying to figure out which Alclads to use.

Airfix are releaseing an FG.1 next month so will be getting that. I hope they will follow it with an FGR.2, and going from past form with the Harriers and other types they should do.

Beautiful detail work and excellent weathering. Did you enhance the rivet holes? They are really popping. I have Academy's F-4C/D that I'm planning to do as a USAF Vietnam era model. Any suggestions?

Thanks guys!

Bish is the FRG.1 1/48?

Jmoran

Thanks. No rivet hole enhacements. The grimy Flory Wash stands out over the lighter base colors giving IMO an excellent representaion of accumulated junk.

This Academy kit comes together very easily needing no putty anywhere. I will suggest the addition of resin seats to really pop that pit. Don't forget to add the intake air sensor tubes on both interior intake outer walls. It's really easy to scratch out with stretched sprue to make both thin T shaped parts.

Ye, and the option of folded wingtips and raised front undercarrage leg. They are nice marking options, i think most people will do the Ark Royal scheme, which is what i will do so ican do a carrier deck dio.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.
