Revell 1/48 F4U-4 Corsair
Posted by Keyda81 on Monday, December 4, 2017 8:54 PM

I attempted this kit once before, and it landed up in the trash.  It's a kit that requires a lot of work, and I didn't know what the heck I was doing when I first attempted it.  2nd time around went much better.  I've been working on this over the past week or so and just haven't gotten around to posting the WIP.

Not much to the pit, but you won't see too much of it anyway.

Before I close her up.

Few hours in and I already have an airplane!

I didn't bother with pics of the several rounds of putty, prime and sand.

Decals are all done.  I still need to add an antenna wire, and touch up a few spots.

I'll post some finished pics tomorrow.  Then next up I think I'm going to do the Skyraider in the same paint scheme to go with this one.

Good show!Toast

332 was my brothers first squadron....much later though, with F-18D's (He's a WSO...back seater). Story I got, regarding the polka dots....the Corsairs were "hand me downs" from a Navy squadron (Checkboard nose). As a joke, some Navy guys painted the white ring and dots...Marines being Marines...said HAHA, jokes on you, we like it and we are going to keep it! Looking forward to your 332 Skyraider! I believe that was next in line after the Corsair, followed by Scooters (IIRC), then A-6's, followed by F-18D.

Here's a nice example of a 332 Skyraider on the airshow circuit...lots of ref pics to be found for that one!

Thanks fermis!  Nice story.  I figured it was time to add some Marines planes to the collection.  Most are USAF, a few Army, and a few Navy.  The Corsair and Skyraider should look nice displayed together.

Here's some finished pics!

Very nice job! I am working on this same kit and wish I could get my wings to fit like yours. I am going to have to pose mine wings up because the fit is so bad. I am impressed with what you have accomplished here.

Thank you!  It's my second attempt at it.  The first did not go so well, lol.

Thanks Eagle90!  I knew what I was in for this time around, and have a lot more knowledge.

Great job. Looks awesome. I remember this kit as a kid. It was my favorite and I built it a few times. I remember it had retractable gear and folding wings. I built one later but if I remember right, the moving features were removed. Anyway, great job on your build.

Very nice model. It makes a great display.

Do the wings actually work? That'd be a real challenge.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Very nice, your work is very clean.

Some Revell kits can be a "challenge". I did the Skyraider, just picked up another one. You'll like that one. Consider after-market bombs, some of them have quite a bit of seam work.

Thanks Chemteacher!  The wings and gear still move.  I fixed the gear in place however.  I always seem to do stuff gear down, I did one plane with gear up, lol.

GMorrison, Thank you, and to an extent the wings do work.  You have to mess with them a bit to get them seated properly when down.  The folded wing just kept popping lose from the down position, and the one in the down position kind of locked itself straight, lol.  So I left them that way.  I could still change them up, but I'd rather not force it and break something.

UnwaryPaladin, Thank you, and yes some can be a challenge, but they can also turn out to be great models.  Most of the kits I've done are Revell.  Thanks for the warning on the bombs!

I've had this one on the sidelines for months. The parts just don't fit like I remember lol.

Nicely done, Keyda.

Years ago on my F4, I tried that "make them fit" technigue...Was 1 for 2. Anywho, makes for more room on the shelf!

This was one of my favorite builds.  I so enjoyed these kits in my youth.  Of course without question I could have never make my wings work.  They alway broke.  Maybe someday, I’ll try this again!  lol!  Great job what brand paint did you use on the exteriors?  That’s spot on.

I probably got lucky with this one, lol.  I didn't have to fight with it too much.

Toshi, I used Testors flat Sea Blue in the little square bottle.  Thank you!

Make them fit? Lol I think I can do that. I've become pretty good at making decent models out of these old Monovell kits lol!

Do you have any more of these Monovell kits in the stash? There is a Monogram Mafia IV GB going on that has recently started. ;)

Yes you are very good at making great models out of those old kits!  I do have a few more old kits in the stash that qualify, but I'm holding onto them to use for my "Planes of Niagara."  I did participate in that group build though....with a F-117 Nighthawnk, and the B-26 Marauder.
