Tamiya 1/32 P-51D - 67th FBS Korea - Memorial Build - WIP
Posted by MrStecks on Monday, February 19, 2018 12:32 AM

(Sorry for the super long post)

This is the introduction to my next aircraft WIP.  It's a meaningful build for me... a memorial to my relative, Maj. Richard E. Steckel of the 67th Fighter Bomber Squadron, who was shot down over N. Korea in 1952.  Here's a picture of him:

He was flying an F-51 Mustang.  One of the reasons I got back into this hobby last year was because I wanted to do a memorial build of his airplane.  All the kits I’ve built in the last year were a great way to build my modeling “chops”, and now I have enough confidence to tackle this project.  For this build I will be using the Tamiya 1/32 P-51D  kit as a starting point.

I have only a limited amount of information about his F-51.  I’ve been able to dig up two pictures of the plane (SN: 44-84945), one from before it went to Korea (in Oakland, CA - April 1949), and one from January of 1952, a few months before he was shot down.
Here’s the first pic, along with some info from the book where this comes from:

Text (paraphrased) and photo from the book, Mustang: Thoroughbred Stallion of the Air By Steve Pace.

This airplane (44-84945) began life as a P-51D-25-NT and once belonged to the 347th Combat Crew Training Squadron at Key Field in Mississippi.
It made a forced landing on October 20, 1945, was repaired and subsequently field modified to serve as a TF-51D-25-NT.  It was modified again to RF-51D-25-NT and served with the 18th FBG, 67th Fighter Bomber Squadron, and was flown by Maj. Richard E. Steckel.  Major Steckel and the airplane were lost in action on May 15, 1952 north of Pyongyang due to enemy fire.

Next is a picture of the plane from the book Mustangs Over Korea: The North American F-51 at War 1950-1953, by David R. McLaren.  Picture taken in Jan. 1952, so they were flying out of K-46 airfield at that time.
The caption says the plane is being run-up by the crew chief, so that’s not Maj. Steckel in the cockpit.  Note the canvas covers on the flying surfaces to protect them from the snow.  Also note, the heavy weathering.  It was modified to an RF-51D-25-NT sometime after this photo was taken.

Here is a color picture of another plane in the 67th FBS that shows the squadron color scheme.

I have a lot of other really good color reference pictures of 67th FBS planes, but I can’t share them with you.  They were sent to me by a former mechanic with the 67th FBS, but with the stipulation that they not be posted to the internet.

This is a color layout document I put together in Photoshop of the 67th FBS squadron color scheme so I would have a handy reference at my bench.

Despite my research, I’ve only found limited info on Major Steckel’s final mission taken from various sources, and it can all be paraphrased down to this:
On May 15, 1952 while on a combat mission he made a run on a ground target north of Pyongyang, received fire from the ground and crashed.  No egress noted.
No remains were ever recovered, so he is listed MIA/KIA.

The biggest challenge in this build will be converting the plane to look like an RF-51D-25-NT.  All the pictures I've seen of the RF versions have that big round camera window in the side of the fuselage.  No idea how to tackle that yet.  If anyone has any ideas please share. Big Smile   Will probably get started on the build this week, after I finish up the Fw-190 A9 I'm doing for the Pride of the Luftwaffe Group Build.

Cheers, Mark

Good stuff Mark! Those are nearly the same reasons I joined this hobby, except it was to build my Grandfather's B-17. That P-51 is supposed to be a honey of a kit. I have to build an F-51 soon myself so i'll be following.

Thanks Joe.  I've only just started on it, but man this kit is amazing.  Astonishing in fact.  Finished up the first few steps, just need to do some detailing and weathering then it's on to the cockpit.

Cheers, Mark

There was a thread not too long ago that someone did on an photo Mustang and he did the window and scratched the camera and other things.  Can't remember who did the build though

Will be looking in on this, I'm sure you will do him proud.

The old 1/24 Heller kit was a RF-51 as I recall.

I'll look around too.

I believe that the buzz number should be RF-945.

There would be two windows, one on the side and one on the bottom, for the vertical and horizontal cameras.

Hey Mark.  Very cool project, and good on ya for honoring your family member.

It's probably too late, but just in case Tamiya's 1/32 P-51D/K "Pacific" boxing (kit #60323) includes all the parts needed for an F-6 recon bird, including cameras and fuselage panels.

Anxious to see the final result!

I checked out the 1/48 F-6D conversion that bvallot showed in his thread that Goldhammer  and 1943Mike pointed me to, and will definitely be using his great work as a reference for my 1/32 conversion.  Seriously, he did an amazing job.  Yes

I found a couple of resin conversion kits out there, both by Quickboost, but unfortunately only in 1/72 and 1/48 so that was a bust.  Also, found the P-51D/K "Pacific" kit by Tamiya that Chuck mentioned, but couldn't find a cheap seller.  Cheapest I found was $89 and I can't justify that just for the few parts I would be able to use.  Sad

However, I did discover something interesting last night.  Since it was looking like a total scratch-build job, I pulled the fuselage out of the kit so I could start planning how to attack it.  I noticed immediatley that the plastic where the camera bay would go appeared thinner.  I turned it over and on the inside there is a clearly defined circle where the cutout in the fuselage should be for the camera bay conversion.

So I'm assuming this kit and that P-51D/K "Pacific" kit must share the same tooling.  Yay!  This will give me a great starting point to work from.  On the downside, there doesn't appear to be areas marked out for the other two holes that will have to be made.  But, I'm super happy to have part of the problem solved.

Cheers, Mark

Bit more of the cockpit components painted and weathered.

I really liked how Tamiya handled the IP, with the decal of the instruments placed on the back of the clear dials part.  My first encounter with this process.

Oil tank and bulkhead.  I don't plan on having any panels open, so I don't know why I invested time in this... but I couldn't resist.

I think the only thing glued down in this pic is the stick.  Everything else just placed together for the photo.  I like the weathering, but I may do a bit more with the floor.  I also want to add some scratch items.

I have some ideas on the scratch-building I need to do for the RF-51 conversion, but won't really start to tackle that whole thing until I finish up these cockpit steps.  Haven't started on the side wall parts yet.

Cheers, Mark

Stecks,

Looks like a great start. Very cool to provide a memorial to your family member who sacrificed it all for his country.

As far as getting the camera, don’t buy the whole kit. You may be able to source the camera from someone who hasn’t used it. There’s places to inquire...

Yeah, I've been looking RadMax.  Saw one seller on eBay that had posted several sprues from that "Pacific" kit up for sale, except for the parts I need.  D'oh!  Still looking.  Smile

Might check with Tamiya and see if the camera sprue is still available, along with the clear sprue for the windows.

Hey All,

I haven’t been around since early March… kind of fell into a bad depression about being unemployed.  It’s been a hard summer, with many opportunities and interviews, but no joy.  I’ve been doing some free-lance work, but still trudging through the wilderness trying to find a steady gig.

Anyway, I shelved this build and stopped modeling for quite a few months.  Now I realize I need the modeling to help dissipate the depression, so I’m making a comeback.
But, the P-51 build is still shelved.  Parts of it, mainly the scratch building, were a bit outside my comfort zone so I’m moving on for now.
I recently built a Wingnut Wings kit (the Fokker D.VII “early”) and will be posting the pics from that build soon.

I’m glad to be returning, and look forward to catching up with you all.

Cheers,
Mark

Glad to see you back.  Modeling is to me is such a great escape.  Sorry to hear about your troubles.  It feels good to put everything else away and do the research, building, painting etc.  I hope you get back on the build and find it helpful.

Thanks,

John

Hey Mark,

Im true believer that when one door closes another opens. I understand what your going through having spent the better part of 3  of the past 7 years unemployed. I just started a new full time role in a totally different industry on a very good package.

Just stick in there, things will get better. The darkest times are when you need to be the strongest and belive in yourself.

And most of all, keep up the stellar work on your build.

Thanks for the encouraging words guys.  I will eventually come back to this P-51 build.  I really enjoyed the Fokker D.VII and am currently working on a Nakajima E8N floatplane from Hasegawa.  I'll post pics of both planes in a new thread, probably tomorrow.

Cheers, Mark

Mark,

Looking forward to the pictures. Hope everything becomes, if not rosy, then at least hopeful.

I imagine your salary requirements are somewhat above entry level work - however, sometimes one just has to bite the bullet (if any opportunity looks as if one could grow with the position) and slog along until you've found your "voice" again.

https://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=Animation+Artist&l=Denver%2C+CO#

I sure hope you find something soon. I also hope that concentration on modeling will alleviate some of the depression that can accompany being out of work. Been there, experienced that.

Thanks for the link Mike.  I check the Indeed (and several other) job lists every day.  :)  I've applied for almost every open Motion Graphics or Animation job in the Denver area.  And you're right, with my experience and talent my salary requirements are definitely above entry level, but I'm fully prepared to accept quite a bit less than I was making last year.  Have had a few interviews at well-paying places, but lost out to other candidates.

I've started expanding my search nationally, even though I dread the idea of moving.  But it might come to that.

Cheers, Mark
