1/48 A-26B Invader Completed
Posted by Wolfman_63 on Monday, March 19, 2018 4:42 AM

Just completed a 1/48 A-26B as a Memorial to a friends father who passed away last month. I was able to gather information that he was a crew chief of an A-26B at the Marianna Army Air Field in Florida at the 137th Training Command in late 1944 until the command was shut down after VE day.

Nicly done memorial.

Who's the manufacture?

It is the Revell model. Lots of putty filling gaps, especially the landing gear doors. The landing gear doors were designed to be open so they required a lot of work to make them closed.

I made the decals for the base and squadron logo's and crew chief name.

I used the Eduard cockpit detail set and the pilot is from the kit.

Revell, especially older molds, didn't engeneer their kits to close hatches and doors, which by default makes them inaccurate.

I though the black boxes were new tools though. Maybe the box color dosn't matter.

The correct spelling for the airfield is Marianna Airfield, later known as Graham airfield, named after one of the civil pilot instructors who worked there.  Marianna is located in the panhandle of Florida, or as we refer to it LA (lower Alabama).

Beautiful job on the A-26 and the display.  I'm sure the family will be pleased with the tribute.

A short diversion:

When I was in high school, living in Saratoga, Wyoming in the mid-60s, an A-26 landed at our local airport.  It was owned by a couple who used it like a flying Winebago.  They flew into an airport, rented a car to see the sights, and stayed in the aircraft at night.  The mid-section of the fuselage was equiped with picture windows of plexi-glass.  That was unique.

Years later, probably in the late 1980s, I was idling away some time in the Valiant Air Command hanger in Titusville, FL, when lo and behold what did I see, but that very same aircraft, sitting in the middle of the hanger with VAC decals.  Just so you know where you can still see one.

That was an On-Mark Invader. That company took surplus Invaders and converted them to one of the early civilan high speed "buisness" aircraft. Most, if not all, Invaders flying today are either On-Mark aircraft or prior fire bombers. The same company also did the A-26K that was used in Vietnam.

Wolfman, where did you get the Air Training Command shield on the nose of the A-26? Did you make the decal yourself? I've been trying to find an ATC shield decal for a T-28A build I am doing.

I really like that you show the A-26 in flight. In flight really shows off the lines of the airplane. A fitting tribute to your friend's father. Well done.

Just as an aside, back in the late 70s, I was a member of the Florida Wing of the (then) Confederate Air Force. An all black executive-type A-26 made a couple of appearances at our airshows. Could this airplane be the A-26 you saw in the VAC hangar? Of course, it's been 30 years, but the only multi-engine airplanes in the VAC hangar today are the B-25 "Killer B" and the C-47 Tico Belle."

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

Yes I made the decal myself. If you know how to make your own, I can email you the hi-res photo. If you want an actual decal, Let me know the size. If it is close to the size I used, I can send it to you as I always make extra when I print them out. If not I can size it to your needs (just need the height you need) and some to you.

Send me a PM on what you want to do.

It is a rebox of the older kit. It is confuseing when they put older kits in the new box, Airfix are the same. Some people think the nice new red box means a new tool, but its not the case.

Great build and even better tribute. The kit is one of the last new tool kits from Monogram before the merger. I have the ProModeler B and the glass nose C in the stash

I love the way you displayed your aircraft.  You’ve done a fantastic job on that build.

Good work on your Invader, and a very nice tribute to the family.  Also, I must say I've never seen an A-26 in this scheme, so that is a refreshing look as well.

Thanks, I was originally going to do the bare metal finish but after some research I found out the training squadron painted them medium gray.
