This was back in the mid 80's.Tamiya's iconic 1/32 F-14 Tomcat,I cant remember what it cost then though.I believe I got two over tbe course of the decade.Handpsinted the 1st one,and later I had to try one when I got an airbrush.
You know I'm sorry,I thought you asking,what was our 1st expensive model,which I think is a cool thread.
To answer your question,any of 1/48 Tamiya kits,or an Eduard weekend edition or ProfiPack kit of those birds.

I did that one myself a few months ago. Great kit!
My Trumpeter SU-27UB is the one at the moment. I messed up my first attempt on a SU-27B model (due to inexperience on paint removal) but this one went together just fine. The only issue is that the missile mounts between engine housings don't fit well height wise. She is a beaut though!

If you want to stay in 1/48, it's hard to go wrong with any of the above. I've built the Tamiya P-47 (razorback is equally great to the bubbletop) and F4U-1A, and Eduard F6F. The latter is probably the best Hellcat in any scale. Tamiya Mustang and Spitfire are great too. Another option not yet mentioned is the GWH P-61. I have not built it but it's supposed to be a very nice kit.
If you'd like to try larger scale without shelling out for a $150-200 1/32 Tamiya Spit or mustang (both amazing kits, btw), you could try the Trumpeter 1/32 F4F wildcat. I'm currently doing the early yellow wings version of that plane and it's a very nice kit - good detail, good engineering, not too many parts, and not too expensive. The Revell 1/32 FW-190A-8 is well reviewed and super cheap for a large scale plane - usually only $25-30. I also just did their new Mustang which was similarly priced and very good for the price.
The Eduard F6F is a great model.

Tamiya's Corsair, P-51, and new tool Zero kits are all excellent. Eduard arguably makes the best Fw-190A, but Tamiya's kit is easier to build. Hasegawa's Hellcat is well regarded, but there are the Eduard and Hobby Boss options. As Keavdog said Tamiya's P-47 kits are also excellent.

Although I have been modeling for four years I have yet to build a non-revell/monogram model. any recommendations on a higher quality 1/48 ww2 fighter. I am partial to the Hellcat, Corsair, p51, zero, and fw190.(i can do others as well, those are just my preferences.)
