Thank you for your kind words Greatmaker. The overall sand topsides sold me on this project. Like you said, it’s different. I also like the fact that they were one of the fist USAAF fighter units to go into action. They were the first in the Western Desert and helped turn the tide at Alamein. Even if it was only a small part.

Beautiful build! You really nailed the scheme and the weathering. Nice to see a different scheme on the 40 well done sti!
Joe, GA, Greg, thank you. It’s a fun little kit and the stand is quick simple project to make it look at home.
In a thread on another forum I confessed that the P-40 is my one 'obsession' aircraft since childhood...though I also confess I'll never quite get used to seeing her in 'gardenia' pink.
All seriousness aside...yours is a truly beautiful bit of work on what we all know to be a challenging kit. Really impressive!

Yes, very nice!
Never give up, never quit, never stop modelling.
Very nice build Stik, and the base really compliments it.

Brandon and Toshi, thank you for looking in and your kind words.
Very awesome build, especially the paint job and the weathering.

WOW!! How did I miss this one. Holy cow, that is a super good looking build, and an old AMT kit to boot. My hats off to you on this for sure. You nailed it. Well done.

Thank you Frank. I have a long tail F and an L in my stash to build one day. The F will be a Torch Kittyhawk, but I have not decided upon the markings for the L yet. That kit (AmTech) has something like six or more markings options.
Ill have to check out “God is my Copilot” sometime. I’ve never seen that movie before. But what is there not to love about the P-40? It was there to help hold the line and turn the tide in the darkest days of the war. And the design just has character. It may not have been the fastest, most maneuverable, or sexiest, but it had a look and did the job.
Stik, this is a nice build. The desert camo is very well done. I've been a P-40 fan ever since watching God is My Copilot with my dad when I was a kid. The 10:30 movie on KMOX-TV in St. Louis, way back when. Anyway, I have three of these AMT P-40F kits in my stash. At least one will be built as a Red Tail P-40 of the 99 FG after seeing the Red Tails movie. Those guys are my heroes!
OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...
Ok, the post script on this build... I added the antenna wire made from E Z line, and whipped up a simple base....
Thanks for looking... again...

docidle Well done Stik, especially since it’s an AMT kit! Steve
Well done Stik, especially since it’s an AMT kit!

LOL! Thanks Steve. It’s like several of their kits from that time, not the greatest, but not bad either.
Thanks Lawdog. I don’t recall coming across one of the Merlin P-40s on here. I have the Amtech L kit with the resin nose as well. When I build that one, I’ll add some of the missing details like the air inlets in the wing roots and the back up ring and post sight.
The fit on this kit is mostly good. A little care needs to be taken on the wing to fuselage fit, the landing gear fairing fronts, and the engine access panels. But with some test fitting, planning, and a bit of pre shape sanding, you’ll eliminate most if not all your need of any fillers. I used zero filler on this build. The only drawback of the kit is that if you want to model an open canopy, you’re going to have to get a vac replacement or sand and polish the hood of the kit part. It’s too thick as is to sit properly in the open position.
Thanks Murph. I can’t really answer your question, as I painted the entire tire with Mission Models Tire Black, including the portions that I sanded flat. Now they may have caught some extra build up of weathering, I used three different “dustings” on them: Tamiya Weathering Medium, Humbrol Pigments, and airbrushed on Dust. Between them all, they may have given the other appearance. I agree about a bare spot attracting attention.
Max, John, and Chris, thank you for looking in and your kind comments. It’s not a bad kit by any stretch, and with a little help, has the potential to be a really fantastic build. OOB, they are simple and fun builds.
Looks really good!

Well done, Stik. I think I have every version of these AMT kits. Someday I will build one!

Nice work, stikpusher. I like the subtle dust trails behind the wheels. It really gives it a dynamic look.
I just picked up both of the P-40 Detail & Scale books, now I’m kinda wanting to build the new Airfix B I have in the stash!
Thank you guys! It’s a good basic kit, and I have plenty of ideas now of how to improve the other AMT P-40 kits in my stash. It is a good solid starting point.

Great build of an older, 'challenging' kit-Nice job on the paint & weathering.

I just completed this build, that I started back in June. It is 95% out of box aside from swapping out the kit seat for an Ultracast resin seat with harness, adding a tissue “canvas boot” in the tail wheel well, and adding a few extra decals from my spares to add markings that the kit did not include but should have. The markings are from the 65th Fighter Squadron, 57th Fighter Group in the Western Desert in late summer/autumn of 1942. I did deviate a bit from the kit markings based upon research of this unit and plenty of photos. The upper surface is Polly S Desert Pink and the under surface is Tamiya Neutral Gray. Most of the rest of the paints are Tamiya.
