MENG P-51D "Yellow Nose"...
Posted by fotofrank on Monday, August 20, 2018 4:10 PM

I'd like to get some input on the MENG P-51D kits, the ones that are sort of snap together kits. Have you built one? What did you think about the kit? I have read reviews of the kits but I'd like to get real world view point. The kit I am interested in mostly is the new kit, the so-called "yellow nose." I knew Bruce Carr back in the '90s. Before knowing Bruce, I had read much about his exploits during the war. While I was still riding, I had the side covers of my Shadow painted with his aircraft designation FT*I. I have wanted to build a tribute model of Bruce's Mustang for a long time. I was surprised to see this new kit from MENG. I have done internet searches for "Angels Playmate" decals in 1/48 scale because I do have a couple of P-51D kits in my stash. I think Hannants has them and I found some in far off Australia. Anyway, if you have built one if the MENG kits, I'd like to get your opinion of the kit. Thanks.

I think this picture of Bruce is from Roger Freeman's "The Mighty Eighth" book.

I think if you look back in the Aircraft posts you will find someone's build, I think it was here on the FSM forum, Frank.

Thanks, Bob. I have that issue of FSM in a pile of magazines somewhere, I just forgot that I had read the article. I think what I'll do is opt for a simpler, more conventional P-51 kit and go ahead and find the decals for "Angels Playmate" online. Thanks again.

Hi Frank!  I built the Meng Mustang last year and it was a real joy.  I loved the parts breakdown.  They really did a good job because it made it easier to paint because they separated the parts based on what color(s) they were supposed to be.

I, too, ran into the issue of the leading edge gun inserts.  However, I found a super easy way around this that worked perfectly.  In the review, the author stated:

"Assembly of the wings went smoothly except for the leading-edge insert with the  machine gun muzzles. I could not press them properly into place and needed to fill the interior structure. After that, the part was slightly recessed on top and needed filler underneath."

All I did was thin the plastic from the inside of the inserts.  Pretend the gun muzzle insert is like the letter "C" when viewed from the side.  I used an Xacto knife to carefully carve away some material from the concave side of the insert (the part that will face inside the wing).  After a couple of trial fits and a little bit more carving away of the plastic, the insert fit perfectly in place.  So we're talking all of five minutes worth of work here.

In all honesty, that was only part of the build where I had to exert any effort.  The rest of the kit went together wonderfully.

I am just an average modeler and I would not hesitate to get this kit again.

Here you go.  I built it last year.  This should tell you everything you need to know.

Yeah, lawdog. I remember the thread. I re-read it and remembered that I really don't think I wan to build the kit. I admire your perserverance. You ended up with a nice build inspite of the difficulties presented by the kit. I think I'm going to build a more conventional P-51 kit and just find the decals for "Angels Playmate" in the aftermarket.
