I guess I'm quickly right back into Luftwaffe mode. I have been tasked with building Friederich Karl "Tutti" Muller's unique Bf 109 G-6 AS "Red 2". Muller was 140 kill ace, including 17 four engine bombers. Muller was KIA during a landing accident in May of 1944. I believe this particular plane was used for Moskito Hunting duties, as evidenced by the blacked out underside. I have no idea what the deal is with the red landing gear legs and wheels.

My research on the G-6 A/S airframe didn't reveal much. I read that it was basically a "G-10 with G-6 wings", so in profile, it looked visually like a G-10 with the streamlined cowl and the taller tail. I'm sure there are many other differences that I'm missing. Truthfully, all the different Gustav variants and sub variants confuse me ad nauseam. Stressing over such things would take the fun out of the project (and my motivation along with it!).

I ultimately opted to use the new release Eduard G-10 "Mtt Regensburg" edition which fortunately seems to have the parts I need from their normal G-6 kit. I'm not even sure what makes the Regensburg planes special to warrant their own kit. I would assume a G-10 is a G-10. I'm no 109 expert, so anyone who would like to educate me about all these things throughout this build are most welcome. This is after all why I do in-progess threads.

I started with the cockpit. I finally got Mission Models RLM 66 and painted it thusly. Eduard does offer a nice pit for the scale, especially with their included PE that they provide with their Profipack kits. I used the included PE belts and instrument panel. I used some Airscale decals here and there.

In no time I had the frame together. These build up very quick. I'm very impressed with Eduard's new 109 kits. They fit great and are definitely the best in this scale.

I should be painting in no time.

Beautiful start as usual! Cool scheme - makes me think of the Civil War era Red Legs or Zouaves

Very nice - just picked up this kit to build as a Croatian 109.

I think the difference between Regensberg and wherever else they were made (Erla?) is in bulges on the wings and maybe fuselage, but that's if I am remembering somehting I read once, so take it with a grain of salt.

Great workj on the canopy, as always.

Whats going on folks? I've been away for a while. The misery of moving into a new house selling your old one, then getting settled in the new one unfortunately took priority (and tried my sanity). Getting the bench set up took some time too. The movers destroyed my bench so I had to improvise a bit. Here's what I came up with for now. I'll need a few tweeks but I'm getting there.

Reference the Gustav, I did manage to finish this turkey up finally. Since I have some catching up to do, I figured I'd start with some more in-progress stuff before the final reveal.

I had trouble finding useful info about Red 2, so I used deductive reasoning. The A/S version appeared to be a G-10 visually with some G-6 characteristics. I used the G-6 prop, chin radiator, flat luggage area behind cockpit, and short tail wheel. Of course I'm probably wrong about all of this....lol.

I added the flaps and such before painting. I find that I get a better bond with plain plastic to plastic welding. I also masked the windscreen and added that too. I've been doing this lately as it makes things easier for me.

I love these Eduard 109s. I don't think they missed a single rivet. I deflected all control surfaces too to add visual interest.

I prehaded with XF-1 then added the red fuse stripe. I then taped it off.

I reasoned that the A/S airframe had the normal G-6 paint scheme of 74/75 over 76 and then black was added to the lower surfaces in the field. I started with RLM 76 then added the 74. I'm really starting to get comfortable with the Mission Models paints. They go down great.

I taped off a standard G-6 scheme I found (I used the Eduard G-6 instructions as reference) the added the RLM 74. Once down, I went back and added mottling with both colors.

I used a left over Montex mask for the fuse cross then added the black over it per the reference I had. I didn't weather the black as I was going for a freshly applied look (Note: I eventually replaced the tail wheel with the short one).

So that's it. The rest of the markings were painted on with some extra Montex masks I was able to scrounge up. Only the prop spiral, swastikas, kill tallies, and stenciling are decals. I did use Ultracast wheels because I had them. Weathering was a mix of fading, streaking, then washes consisted of Flory and AK working together.

I'm very happy with it. These new Eduard 109 kits are edging up close to the Tamiya Jug as my favorite kits. Here it is. I think I like it better than Tamiya's new Gustav.
