I'm really impressed by the level of detail these new Airfix kits have. You nailed this one down from the pit to the colors/weathering and display base, the finished product looks amazing. Great job dog!

That turned out great - as usual!  I like the repair scenario - looks believable.  What a story.  Thanks for the Airfix kit tip - an Airfix Hurricane is now on my wish list.

I finished this one up last night.  To recap, It's in the markings of a Hurricane flown by Ken Mackenzie of 501 Squadron in October of 1940.  He downed 7 aircraft during the Battle of Britain to include a 109 by ramming.  Here I have replicated SX-D after the starboard wing tip had been replaced after the successful ramming of the 109 on October 7th 1940. Note the fresh green paint.  In reality, the aircraft may have been damaged beyond repair and scraped, but it may have been repaired too.  I'm going for the latter which is a more interesting scenario.   

I'm pleased with how it turned out.  This is definitely the best Hurricane in this scale, way better than the Hasegawa version. The only improvements were Eduard Brassin resin wheels and Eduard PE seatbelts.  I drilled out the exhausts and added brake lines. All main markings were painted on using Montex masks.

I do have a question.  What's the story with the ramming?  It would be hard to ram a 109 with a Hurricane.  Was the 109 chasing someone else?  Was the 109 already damaged?  Was it an unintentional ramming?

Lovely work Joe.  Next I'll be waiting for you to dispense with the stencils and just use your airbrushing skill to paint them on 

Man, if I built at your pace, I would have my stash cleared up in no time!  To top it off, the plane looks fantastic!

Beautiful work, Joe. The Spitfire has been given credit for winning the war for Britian, but the stats show the Hurricane actually did far more for the effort, it just wasn't the darling. Too bad, its a beautiful bird and your version looks likes its in motion.

Ole, Airfix has been putting out some gems lately.  You should see their P-40B and P-51D, both awesome.  My one gripe is the color and texture of their plastic.  It's a bit soft and I prefer the normal darker grey. 

Anyways, I'm clicking along on this one.  After adding Montex masks, I got to painting the standard day fighter scheme.  I started by using up the last of my Gunze Dark Earth.  From now on I'll mix this color with Tamiya paints as I don't particularly like the glossy nature of this paint.  I added XF-57 Buff and faded it a bit.  

I prefer slightly feathered pattern lines, so I used blue tack roles for the camo pattern. It was time consuming but well worth it.

I used XF-81 RAF Dark Green then sprayed the green.  I faded this with the XF-57 as well.  I then removed all the masks.  The Montex worked very well.  

I added some exhaust staining and general westhering around the engine area with a postshade.  XF-19 Sky Grey was used for the heat staining behind the exhausts.  I was going for subtle.

Mackenzie used this machine to ram a BF109 and that endeavor ripped off the starboard wingtip.  I figured the RAF fixed the damage and put it back on the front line.  I decided to simulate this repair with fresh Dark Green paint.  I figure it will blend in a bit more when washed and weathered a bit.   

I dirtied up the bottom too, concentrating on the center line. 

Almost time for a gloss coat. 

Looks great so far. Also good to see Airfix putting out some nice kits.

I always enjoy watching your works in progress. So edifying, such superlative skills on display. BUT, you work rather quickly so, to paraphrase a line from "The Usual Suspects", And like that… it's gone. Therefore I'm glad I found this one before it disappeared around the corner.
