Help with trailing edges
Posted by boatdetective on Monday, February 25, 2019 10:30 AM

So, I felt the itch and picked up an Eduard 1/48 P-39. Interesting plane and I've enjoyed my smaller scale Eduard kits. I'm disappointed with the fit and especially the wing trailing edges- they are VERY thick. What do you guys do for this?  I can see taping sandpaper to aflat surface (glass) and carefully working the mating surfaces down evenly on both sides.

The fuselage to wing fit on the upper surface will also be a challenge. Seems like the fuselage distorted inward a bit, which will make for a much wider gap. I wont't be able to push the fuselage outward after the two halves are glued together and the cockpit is installed. It's going to be a real pain to fair in the joint.

I have to say that Tamiya's attention to stiffening parts with ribs and frames really does make a difference. The engineering that went into my Tamiya 1/72 Sturmovik is impressive.

Jonathan,

Sanding down the trailing edges should work pretty good. As far as the wing root gap problem - you might be able to glue a piece of styrene rod between the two halves to act as a spacer that will push the fuselage out a little. Would have to do a lot of dry fitting to get the length right and make sure you don't push it out too far.

Ditto on the sanding, although think through ahead of time what other problems that may create.

Another method for the root gap is to glue the wing top halves to the fuselage first, them glue the bottom (s) on to that.
