How about a picture?

"Can you fly this plane and land it?...Surely you can't be serious....I am serious, and don't call me Shirley"

The first thing I do for weathering is paint chalking. I mix up some white added to the topside color of the plane, unless it has a camouflage scheme.  In that case I just use white.  I dial the paint flow way back so I can build up a very light tint.  I use this on top of wing and tail surfaces.  Then I shade top of fuselage to match wings, carrying a lighter amount of fading on to the fuselage sides.  This make decal markings look faded too.
