1/48 Tamiya Dewoitine D.520 GC II/7 2nd Esc (Finished)

This is a subject I would probably never build on my own.  I'm just not into French aircraft I suppose nor do I know much bout their Air Force during the war.  From what I read, the D.520 was somewhat capable against the Bf109, but it was never made in sufficient numbers to be effective.  I've been tasked with building it none-the-less.  The good news is the kit is Tamiya and it sports a pretty sweet looking paint scheme. Anyways, I figured I'd share it.

Again, I don't know much about French aircraft, so I used Tamiya's paint recommendations throughout.  I used Tamiya XF-24 Dark Grey for the pit. I threw in a set of PE belts from the stash.

I used the kit IP decal and with some supporting detail painting, I was happy with it.

I got here pretty quick.  What an ugly plane.

I'll be doing the middle subject, the black panther #4.  I will unfortunately have to use these decals which are 25 years old.

I started by preshading the panel lines then sprayed the rudder the tri-color of red white and blue.  I taped that off then sprayed the Tamiya recommended XF-25 Light Sea Grey and XF-2 White for the lower.  With all the colors, I used the light/dark reverse basing technique.  I find it effective for weathering.

I used Blue Tac for the demarcation lines then sprayed the first of three colors, 2 parts XF-23 Light Blue and one part XF-25 Light Sea Grey.

I used more blue Tac as masking then fired down the green by using XF-5 Green and a few drops of XF-49 Khaki.

I use cheap painters tape for fill in.  Tamiya tape is too expensive.

Next I added the brown, about half XF-52 Flat Earth and XF-64 Red Brown.

It's fairly neat scheme but I was happy when it was over. The rudder painting turned out ok I think.  Much better than trying to use the decal.

I did some postshade weathering, added some exhaust staining, then glossed it with X-22/MLT for decals.  The decals were quite thick and required a half a bottle of Micro Sol to get them to behave. I chalked it up to their age as I normal don't have issues with Aeromaster.  I gave the panelines a Mig wash and that's where I left off.

The Aeromaster sheet I used for Daddy's Girl was an earlier number then this one and was great.  Might be something to do with the colors for how thick they were

Ugly plane or not, when she's dressed up and shiny she still looks ready to dance.

I see you bouncing back and forth between the Tamiya paints and HK Real Colors. What's your take on how they work...coverage (opacity), lay down, Thinning required, color accuracy, etc?

I have the same Daddy's Girl Sheet, so that's good news.  I had to put the fuselage roundels on top of the white arrow, so that may have contributed to my issues.  I should have just painted these on.

I suppose ugly people can dance.  I'm 0 for 2 there though.....lol.

Yeah, after trying several brands over the years (Model Masters, MRP, Mission), Tamiya and AK have become my two primary paints, at least for my needs.  lets see....

1. Tamiya covers great with a touch of alcohol to thin. I use their lacquer thinner as well.  With alcohol it dries very quick, which is great when your concerned with bleed under (such as painting on insignias).  I find these easy to weather due to the dead flat finish of the XF line. I get the 23ml jars so they last a long time.

2. AK Real Colors are my new favorite for scheme specific colors, ie OD over Neutral Grey, RLM colors, etc.  I slightly thin it with their own thinner and adjust accordingly.  It sort of smells like Aqua Net hairspray to me (which I like...I know I'm weird).  It goes down silky smooth....zero pebbling.  I can add Tamiya paint to it for weathering as well, such as Tamiya buff or white as they are completely compatible.  As opposed to Tamiya XF, it dries to a semi matte with a sight sheen. I just got their dark sea blue and intermediate blue for an upcoming Hell Diver.

Hope this was helpful....

Wow, you're doing some great work on a little-seen subject.  I agree, French subjects just are not that interesting, but this one bears a little interest in that it did hold its own against the Bf-109s that it encountered in the Battle of France in 1940.  I actually have this kit in my stash, and have long planned to do the one with the yellow-and-red striping on the nose and rudder.

I believe I'm done. Although not really my cup o' tea, it was an easy build, typical Tamiya all the way around.  The toughest part was the camo.  The Aeromaster decals were circa 1994 and I had trouble getting them to settle in. In hindsight, I should have painted on everything except the black panther.  Other than PE seatbelts, brass tube MG barrels and pitot tube, it's out of the box.  Paints were Tamiya mixed and it was weathered with Mig and AK oil washes.  (I got a few MIG washes to compare them to AK, they essentially perform the same way).

I can highly recomend this kit for those interested in this subject.

Nice job, Joe.  I have the same bias against French WW II airplanes, but this one and the Dewoitine 500/510 series seem to possess some elegance.  Unlike all those airplanes designed by Bloch before and during the war.  No wonder he changed his name to Dassault after the war!

Nice job here, once again.

Lawdog114, that is a really neat build, and educational. If someone had asked me what a Dewoitine  is; I would have guessed that it is some kind of paint thinner!

Right there with you, John.  The D.520 is a good-looking warbird.

Thanks.  I was thinking a cheap wine or maybe a topical antiseptic.  Oh that's Bactine.
