Hobbyboss 1/18 Me 262 - The Build!

very very nice progress.

I have the 1/18 pre-built Me262 version. It looks awesome when hanging from my man cave.

I've built  1/32 Me262B from Revell & Trumpeter below

If I ever got one of those bad boys.I would paint it in the night fighter light gray and dark grey mottle..so cool!

I definitely agree about the 1/32 trumpeter kit. This is my feeble effort with one, OOB markings, and I found the trumpeter decals to be of good quality. A Big Ed PE kit added some cool detail.

This was not quite finished, still need small details like antenna and weathering, but I was very mild on weathering it. None of these planes lived long enough to get too badly beaten up.

This is the old 21 Century kit in a different box with no changes, except that the 21 Centuary offering had both this and the 2 seater nightfighter in one box and is practically very much toy like. If you are very much a scratchbuilder and detailer then it can be a rough canvas to build on.

I decided to leave it just out of the box and do an unusual paint job for which the "Luft '46" way seems to work. THe aim to make it less toy like is to keep the onlookers eyes moving so that the large panel line gaps seem to stand out less, but add a darker shade which doesn't make them stand out so by using RLM 79, the original Luftwaffe desert shade as the base colour then one of the Afriks Korps vehicle paint which is lighter with a very slight tinge of grey as a splinter pattern keeps the brain working to try and define the overall effect and so keeps the eye moving.

Once the custom paint Masks come from Maketar the late war crosses in 1/24 scale will be done in black which will stand out on the desert camo upper surface and the RLM78 undersurface which will also keep the eyes moving. The aircraft number will be RLM 24 with a white border and the tail swastica black with a white border along with the "squiggle" after the fuselage cross.

There are other things to add apart from the stencils too including a 1/35 DAK palm tree.

There is much surface detail missing and I will be using the stencils to try and simulate them.

Trumpeter's 1/32 262 kits are IMHO the best while this is impressive in size, lacks detail and only a damn good paint job or lots of scratch stuff will make it decent. In reality this is designed to be snapped and screwed together for kids to play with.

Now if a properly intensivley detailed 1/24 should appear, like the Airfix Tiffy and Hellcat in decent plastic then Oh Boy!!!!!

I get it on ebay and it also works well on pla and petg pieces from the 3D printer. Unfortunately, it doesn't work well on resin pieces from the sla printer, I still have to use CA for that.

Next, great build!! This is my all-time favorite aircraft, Die Schwalbe. You really are doing it justice. I didn't know HB was doing these in 1/18th, but I have seen the FW190 kit on ebay in that scale. I knew about the 21st century pre-painted and mostly assembled offerings, and I have several of them as they make good battlefield pieces for the 1/16 RC Tanks. They're easy to find on ebay, and I have three of the Bf109s, a Stuka and a P-51.

This is the Stuka, which is truly huge in this scale.

And here's the Bf109, with Galland's markings, and both of these are straight out of the box. You just click the wings in place and lock them down with a screw. One disadvantage to the Stuka is that once you click the wings in place there's no going back, so trying to ship an assembled Stuka can get pricey. On the smaller planes the wings will come off so you can get them in a much smaller box.

I can't wait to see more of your build. I'll have to look around to see if that kit would be cheaper than getting a ready made 262. I really want one, but so far the price has held me up. I got the 109s for about $50 each on ebay, but they want $150 to start for the 262, and the P-38 is even more. They're all out of production so they can sometimes be hard to find, too. And I just saw the 262 kit at $179 so that answers my question as to which is cheaper. 

Some of my RC tanks are in 1/6 scale, a 262 in that scale would be a monster, eh? I imagine the RC aircraft guys have already got them in that scale and even bigger.

True. As builds progress the area gets smaller!

I have HB's Huey in 1/18 lined up, but when that gets here it will go into the stash after a look through and I decide on just how to proceed with that.

I am also looking at reconfiguring my storage too as well as finishing off some part built stuff from this year which I had to put aside for a while.

Theatre markings, Port and starboard Nav light colours done, overspray corrections in progress and nearly finished.

Rather than make the wing white theatre markings quite deep, I stuck to the wingtip panel line to make them a little less obtrusive. After all, this is a "What if..." paint job. The nose has been painted in RLM 24 Marking blue and is partially masked as there was a slight bleed onto the camo which  needs correction.

Tamiya Clear Red and Green for the Nav lights, I like this paint more than Vallejo and others as it is paint brush handy and easy to apply.

Peddinghaus decals are now in my grubby paws, and although the set is expensive (especially for just 2 decals that I want to use) the white rudder will look so nice with the 200 kill markings!

Just a little overspray to correct and I am just waiting for the Maketar Insignia masks to appear. The late war cross' I will do in black the swastika will have a white border as will the 'Blue 4' number etc.

Looking at the 1/24 decal sizes for the insignia compared to the 1/18 ones and holding them to the model makes me think that I have chosen better sizes. Time will tell.

Ok. Painting and re-painting going on.

I have been advised by email that the custom masks are on the way. Maketar don't mess about!

I am having issues with Paypal and the new double layer of security which means I keep on getting locked out of my account and the phone call to my landline which is approved on my account to which I have to input a pin code never happens. Their help people don't seem to be able to do anything or advise me. I am at the end of my tether and have opened another account to purchase the masks... now that is asking for authorisation by phone!

Anyway.... back to this.

The Luft '46 paint job is taking extra time as I used RAL7008 as the disruptive splinter camo over the RLM 79.Once that had dried and I took the masking off I realised that it was the green used as tank camo, not the colour I wanted.

I have re-masked and am applying RAL 7027

Once this has been completed and the RLM 79 redone to fix overspray of RLM 78 I can apply the white theatre markings or wingtips and rudder. Nosecone will be RLM 24 Blue.

I am just wondering, as I am using the late war cross to do them black or white. Although this is 1/18 scale, I think that the national insignia on the decals may be oversized a little, so I have gone for 1/24 scale. After all, this is a "What If" paint job!.

I also have some DAK palm trees in 1/35 from AFT which I think I will put one on in the cockpit area.

Ok... Dried out and restored to operating condition.

Painting has begun and I will be ordering custom insignia etc. paint masks and decals to use. The kit decals insignis look a little big for what I want to do, so, having the official sizes used on the aircraft I think that I will go with 1/24 scale size. Stencils from the kit decals and some extra stuff from Pedinghaus and Archer too should add a bit of extras!

I won't be doing any work today after my Birthday and Trafalgar lunch. The brain is wobbling!

Lunch around my table for 6 was as follows:

Salmon oven cooked in foil in white wine, Unsalted Butter, Chives and dill with only a hint of black pepper. (150 degrees for 30 min)

Prawns fried in unsalted butter with garlic and smoked paprika.

Cheesy mashed potato, fried so there is a skin on.

Green Salad with a honey and mustard dressing

Creamy mushroom sauce using chestnut and white button mushrooms, onion, garlic.

This proved to be an inspired choice and everybody nodded and said it was excellent. Light and fruity and went well with the various items.... still drinking this and I think it will be a staple in the house for white meats and fish.

Our guests provided the sweet which was various Polish dessert cakes which was combined with Asdas own Vanilla scoft scoop Ice cream.

Matched with this, which is one of the best Prosecco types I have ever had and am still drinking, even one of my guests who does not like this stuff said it was really nice!

Genuine Grog was available using the official Royal Navy Recipe and Pussers Black Label Gunpowder Proof Admiralty Rum (Pussers).

Proper Italian Roast coffee served and the traditional RN toasts observed plus an extra one for Nelson and the Trafalgar Fleet!

Anybody has any more interest please post etc and let me sober up enough to read the labels.  The Medication is going to complain like hell.... but every so often the rules have to be broken..... or well and truly bent!!!!!!

This looks a bit like the 1/18 AV-8 Harrier kit--similar sorts of almost snap-tite level detail and fit, and a bunch of "operating" features.

Probably not a kit needing an extra-fine nozzle airbrush, either. 

Mind, finding model paint in half-pint containers might also be an issue.

That, and needing flaked salt rather than table salt if using that weathering technique

Slight delay, but here's the pictures.

For those with excellent scratchbuilding skills, of which I haven't, and you can get past the really simplistic toy type attempt then with a lot of extra time and immense amount of extra work then probably an excellent rendition of this aircraft could be done. However, I have neither the time or inclination to add and scratchbuild what is needed! an exterior paint job is what will make this look good.

There are still parts to add into the gun bay and I don't think that the plastic is styrene. My normal glue doesn't seem to be welding stuff together. this could be ABS!

Oh man, all I see is a giant canvas to have fun with
