Accurate MIniatures 1/48 P-51A
Posted by jeaton01 on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 1:56 AM

I felt the need for a quick build so last week I pulled out this kit.  I tried for a well used look on this model as it was used in Burma and the Allison Mustangs served for a long time.  Kit decals worked well but I painted the number on the tail.  Tried salt weathering for the first time, proved I have more to learn but it worked OK.

I added Eduard seat belts and wire for the drop tank plumbing.  I was disappointed in the quality of the clear parts, next time I'll use vacuform canopy glass.

I like these Accurate Miniatures P-51A models. They build up really nice. I've built the F-6B and the cannon armed P-51A. I still have this kit in the closet waiting for some attention. The paint chipping is just enough to show wear. A really good build. The only criticism I have is the landing gear doors. The Allison Mustangs had a different hydraulic system than the Merlin Mustangs and an up-lock for the gear doors. When parked, the flaps and gear doors didn't sag like the Merlin Mustangs.

Really nice, Jeaton.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

WOW!!! Turned out great Jeaton. I've never used the salt trick myself but ....I'm definitely inclined to now that I've seen this build. Way to go brother.Yes

Thanks, everyone, you are too kind.

Frank, the check valve is leaking on this oneSurprise.  I do have the maintenance manual for the P-51 thru the P-51C, and it makes no mention of a difference in the hydraulic systems you mention.  But I don't know for sure.

Frank's comment was bugging me, there has been so much discussion about gear doors and flaps on Mustangs, so I spent much of the afternoon studying the P-51A, P-51B, and P-51C Erection and Maintenance manual I have which is a WW II document.  See my post in aircraft if you are interested.
