1/72 Revell He177 A5 “Greif” - WIP Update 1

Hello friends. Well I didn't do so well last year when it came to WIP's.  I started a few and didn't finish a few. To be honest my heart really just wasn't into it. So far I like what I see. The moulding is clean and crisp and the details are very small but very legible. Such small parts unfortunately do sometimes mean irritating flash which this kit is no exception. Other than that, this should be a pretty straightforward build as fit and finish are good so far. BTW, I have no idea what is going on with the fake cloud camouflage but that's what I will emulate. Thank you for looking and cheers to a new year!

I hate it when i can't see pics at work. Is this the original release in the blue box or the release in the black. I have the former and will be following along either way, nice to see one of these here.

And i notice you have a 251 at the plate Chad, any chance of a WiP.

It does. Just wouldn't be a 177 without those sweet guided bombs!

Howdy Bish.  It's the newest release with the black box. Great kit with excellent detail.  I'll get a WIP up and running for that 251 soon. Ive actually got all parts ready for paint.  Just waiting on some AFV Club tracks to come in before I dig out the airbrush.

Hello friends. I wish I had a more substantial update but I ran into a pretty disappointing problem!  Ive almost finished construction of the internal components within the fuselage so I can get everything painted and get the fuselage closed up. In doing so I ran across a very disappointing aspect of this kit. The clear parts are probably the worst molded glazing I’ve seen!  Each clear part has a very rough orange peel texture molded into it which cannot be buffed out.  In addition, one of the components came split in two. I've glued it back but in my eyes it's still unacceptable.  I’ve decided to order the Falcon Vac Canopy Set which will come from Europe. In the meantime. I can still paint the internal cockpit and landing gear components. So if you're willing to tackle this kit, you might want to go ahead and order a replacement canopy set.

Ouch, thats looks nasty. I think i have the Squadron vac canopies for mine, might have been a good call. Can't you get the falcon sets over there.

I'll be looking at this when I get home Chad. I'm a sucker for the 177.

They used to be more readily available over here. Unfortunately, not any longer.

After doing a little research this is in fact a derivative of the old Airfix kit which will explain the excess flash. Sorry about the luck with the clear parts but glad to see that you've got a vacuform replacment on the way Chad. Looking good so far ol' buddy.

Well, that's certainly a disappointment!

Joe, the Revell kit in fact has no relation to the Airfix kit.  I have both and just compared them to make sure oldfartism wasn't setting in.  The Airfix kit is a 60's raised panel line rivet fest.  I remember when the Revell kit came out and we were all very happy to have a replacement.  The only issue I can see with the clear parts in my Revell kit is that the framing is heavier than I would like on the nose bowl and it's a bit on the thick side, but the clarity is good.

I stand corrected on that then and thanks for the correction John. That's what I get for looking at Scalemates and trusting in their time line. lol

Joe, i think you must have been looking at the full history of He 177 kits. If you just look at the revell timeline, you can see there is no link to the Airfix kit. The Revell one was a new tool in 2000. I do find that full history tab a bit confuseing.

That's what I was thinking. It's a little misleading alright.
