1/48 Airfix P-40B Flying Tigers / Hells Angels, R.T. Smith, Kunming, June 1942 (Complete)

I've been looking forward to this kit in my stash for a while and decided it was time to build it.

The Airfix P-40B kit received positive reviews and I've always liked the camo and the Flying Tigers markings. I chose White 47 of the 3rd Pursuit Squadron, piloted by Robert T Smith, the "Hell's Angels" squadron flight leader.

R.T. Smith joined Colonel Claire Lee Chennault's American Volunteer Group (AVG) as a "soldier of fortune" with the Nationalist Chinese Air Force. in July 1941. The Flying Tigers, as they were soon to be called, were in Burma training in Curtiss P-40s when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Smith was credited with shooting down a total of 9 Japanese planes, and was twice decorated by the Chinese government.

I've added the Eduard seat belts and Master gun barrels and sights as well as the Eduard masks for the canopy. I'm using Mr. Color paints for the main camo.

The cockpit is nicely detailed and the build is relatively straightforward.

The surface detail isn't at the level of Eduard's or Tamiya's latest kits with rivets and panel lines but I think the fabric control surface rendering is really good.

I primed with Mr. Surfacer, which always serves as a nice canvas for the main camo.

The main camo was painted with plenty of fading and shading. From the photos of the plane, the camo is particularly hard edged, so I used masking tape for the masks between colors. Gloss coat was Mr. Color GX100 - good stuff.

Time for decals. Thanks for looking.

Beautiful work. I’m almost finished on the 1/72 version. Great kit.

How odd. It looks just like mine lol!

Be very careful with the sharks mouth decals, they are quite fragile and mine broke into 5 or so pieces which only made alignment even harder.

I don't suppose you are going to use the pilot figure?

Great work, Hoss - the interior looks brilliant!  I've seen a couple of builds of this kit recently, and now I'm sold on it.  I've added it to my list to buy (next year).  I look forward to seeing yours finished, you're certainly doing it justice so far!

Vell, Zaphod's just zis guy, you know?

Thanks for the tip on the decals. Yes, my shark teeth ripped in a couple of places. No pilot figure for this one. Thanks.

My rendition of R.T. Smith's White 47 is now complete. Overall this was an enjoyable build. The construction was simple and it looks the part.

Pros:

  • Decals - nice and thin, very well printed
  • Clear parts
  • Fabric rendering on control surfaces
  • Cockpit detail

Cons:

  • Sparse surface detail
  • Thick trailing edges
  • Panel lines are way too pronounced

Enjoy the photos and thanks for looking!

Now that is some NICE camo!  I'm with you on the cons.  My biggest issue with Airfix aircraft are thick trailing edges and the often overdone panel lines.

Looks fantastic!

I have 2 in my stash as the P-40 is my favorite warbird. Gonna do a Tiger and a Pearl Harbor fighter.

Thanks Mopar! This was my first recent Airfix kit. Didn't know that thick trailing edges and panel lines were  typical with them. Thx.

Beautiful build....excellent photography. Despite the shortcomings of the kit you managed to pull this one off very well.

I love this build, excellent finish on her. Can't get enough flying tigers and their p40s. I have built Tex Hill's p40b and p40e, still have this same airfix kit. Thinking of doing plane flew by Bill Reed.  Once again, great inspiration for me.

Thanks Mustang. Much appreciated. I had my doubts and had to rework some areas, but I'm happy with how it turned out.

Thanks. Not sure if you did the Airfix kit, but it's not quite in the Tamiya or Eduard league. However, I think it still looks the part. I'm happy with how it turned out. Thanks again.

I got a Hasegawa P40 in the mail today.  After seeing this terrific build I'm really inspired to start mine.  What did you use to replicate the dust/grime on the wing root?

Thanks again. For the wing root weathering, I used a "dark dirt" Flory wash followed by spraying a thin, black-brown mix over the panel lines. I followed that up with some dirt pigments and various colored pencils.

Hope that helps.
