A beautiful finish on this one, too, LD!  I'm with you about the -B versus the -D.  I like the lines of the razorback, I think it looks more like a racer.

And when I think of Major Howard, I remember reading how he had to crank the seat all the way back, to be able to cram himself into the cockpit.

Do you mean the vent on the underside of the fuselage?  If you do, it's funny, but on the ICM kit, which I believe is derived from Tamiya's, the same area is a pain to deal with.  The fuselage floor piece doesn't fit properly, which creates gaps at the vent area.  When I built that one, I actually crawled under a P-51B at a local airshow to get a good look at that area.

 

Thanks Baron.  Howard was a true bd a@@. Indeed, that area.  The worst area on these kits. I've never done the ICM one, but like you said, it's my understanding it's basically a copy of the Tamiya kit.  Surprised they let you do that.....lol.

This thread reminds me of the old Monogram 1:48 Ding Hao back in the day.  It was the first model I had built that was cast with detail on both the inside and outside of the fuselage!

For those of us of a 'certain vintage,' I'm pretty sure that was probably our first encounter with both 'Ding Hao' and the Mustang in general...certainly the piano-hinged canopy model B/C.

As a huge James Howard fan, it pleased me that Monogram kept reissuing those same markings virtually from beginning to end.

Thanks Greg.  Indeed, like Neel Kearby's P-47, I read about him and had to do Ding Hao.  I tend to get inspired by the stories of these pilots.  There will never be men like this again.  We owe them a great deal of gratitude.

Nice work, Joe.  Have you tried the Accurate Miniatures P-51B kit?  Not as easy to build but still a nice kit and it does have the correct floor.

 

Thanks Jeaton.  I have not. Actually I forgot about that one. I suppose I just assumed Tamiya is the gold standard.  We are still way overdue for a new one.  I'm surprised Eduard hasn't stepped up yet.  Their D is excellent.
