Hello, what F4F plane and markings did Wade McCuskey have at Midway? I am seeing all kinds of conflicting info online and thought I would ask one you historian model experts. Thanks in advance. George

Wade McClusky flew an SBD-3 Dauntless dive bomber at Midway, not an F4F Wildcat fighter.

The Dauntless markings were pretty plain...star roundels with the red centers painted out, with black letters 'GC' (for group commander) just beneath the rear cockpit gunner's position.

Here is a drawing of it.  Can't vouch for the accuracy of it.

For the initial June 4th strike, his plane was loaded with one 500lb gray G.P. Mk. 12 bomb centerline, and two 100lb gray G.P. Mk. 4 bombs outboard.

Looks correct.  I have the 1/48 Hasegawa SBD-3 in the stash and located these decals.  I'm doing Bests mount but it also has McClusky amongst others

Thanks,

John

Good call, Stik, it's worth it to ask to clarify the question.

Another detail that could lead astray someone unfamiliar with McClusky is that he did fly Wildcats, albeit before Midway.  He was posted to Fighting 6 in 1940, and eventually commanded the squadron, before he was promoted to CEAG about a month before the battle.  Very easy to come up with a lot of details in a web search, that might need some sorting out to keep straight.

Excellent call, indeed...which would explain George's initial comment about 'conflicting info,' which frankly confused me. Easy enough to conflate similar names...which we've all done at one time or another.Embarrassed

In that event...there's an illustration here:

Hey Tom - the manufacturer is Starfighter Decals and it looks like they do not have this in 1/32.

They do however have a set for Wildcats at Midway including E.S. McClusky's mount
