1/48 Hasegawa Maachi C.202 378a Sq. 155o Gr "Serafini" (Finished)
Posted by lawdog114 on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 3:21 AM

Hello, I just finished this one so thought I would share it.  It's the 1/48 Hasegawa Maachi C.202 done up in the 378a Sq. 155o Gr. markings of Ferrucio Serafini that he flew over Malta in July 1942.  Serafini had 7 kills to include 2 Spitfires.  Italian subjects, other than pizza, lasagna and the sort, aren't exactly my specialty, so I won't pretend to know about them or their air force.  Hopefully the gent I built it for knows.  Well, it's my understanding the 202 was a formidable machine, similar to the Bf 109, and could hold it's own against the allied machines as evidenced by his two Spit kills (the little white line on the tail is actually the silhouette of a Spitfire).

This isn't one of Hasegawa's best, pretty basic, and it fought me pretty much the whole way.  I think my issues stemmed from a warped port fuselage piece (I bought the kit used off ebay).  Who knows.  Time and again you'll have one of those I suppose, but I made the best of it.  I added an Ultracast seat and wheels.  I managed to lose one of the small inner gear bay doors and had to fabricate a new one out of plasticard.  Everything white was painted on and the rest were Stormo decals which worked great. Paint was thrown together with Tamiya paints per recommendations I found online.

Now Hasegawa's Ki-84 is a modern art masterpiece, it will be next.  Then I need to try one of Eduard's new Spitfires.

This looks great!  I've got one in the stash, never built an Italian fighter before!

My brain is having a hard time negotiation the super even semigloss sheen and the wear from the foot traffic on the wing root....but it looks great regardless!

Thanks Justin.  I hated this build and wanted to get it overwith. I prefer a slight sheen to my models as it makes dusting them easier. That said, it probably could use a few more shots of dullcoat on the wings. I'll probably do it....or I might not.

I totally understand!  Just want to be done with it!  It doesn't detract from it, it was just slaying with my brain....

(I'll be making a post later, but...) I've found that the flat coat helps to hold onto those dusty pigments better than any kind of gloss....just a couple of cents from my experience.

regardless, I love it, and hope mine comes out as good!

I think we all focus on P 51s, FW 190s, etc. when talking about impressive World War II fighters. This is one that is rarely mentioned and very underated. Yours is an impressive specimen!

You may have hated her but she's another beauty from your workshop! Love the camo, it's a pain to get right and yours is perfect!

The 202 was a darn fine fighter. The problem with Italian aircraft is they hand-built everything. This works great for expensive sports cars like a Lamborghini or Ferrari but not so well for aircraft. While the Japanese and Germans were cranking out a hundred Zeros or 109s the Italians might get 3-5 Macchis off the assembly line.

I'm with Cliff...if it fought you all the way, you obviously kicked its plastic Censored back to the injection-molding machine. It's gorgeous...and one of those splendid Mediterranean designs we see all to seldomly.

Well done! YesBeerYesBeerYesBeer

Gorgeous model! Seeing your beautiful finished results make it difficult to imagine that you were working with so many challenges as per your post.

Looks like perfection to me.

Interesting subject. I don't much about these either. But your camo work is superb as always. Cool scheme. Congrats.

Thanks. I still use good old Testors dullcoat. Have yet to find anything better.

Thanks! I'm not surprised these were hand built, like the rxotic cars. The Lamborghini Countach was my dream car back in the day. Thanks to Cannonball Run of course.
