Tamiya P-38F/G Lightning Finished . . .
Posted by fotofrank on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 1:41 PM

Yep, finally finished this kit. I bought the kit back when it was in high demand, the must-have kit for 2019. Well, here it is August 2022 and the build is complete. Sometime back I got as far as paint and decals and then shelved the kit. The kit seemed just too fiddly. So this past weekend I pulled the kit off the shelf of doom and finished it up.

I didn't want to build another O.D. and gray P-38 though. I figured that Lockheed must have had a factory demonstrator, so that's what I built. The build is OOB, nothing aftermarket added. I think I primed the airplane with Mr Color Gloss Black then sprayed AK Polished Aluminum overall. After the kit decals were on, the whole airplane was sealed with Tamiya X-22 Gloss Clear.

I know that Tamiya has released their P-38J but I'm not going to run out and add it to the stash. Anyway, here's the finished build:

Looks great. Nice choice on avoiding the OD and gray. That's what's keeping me from building the one I have in the stash. Good idea on the Army demo.

Thanks, everyone. I do have a real penchant NMF aircraft. Now that the build is finally completed, I really like how the model looks.

Thanks for your comments.

That's beatiful! I like natural metal finish too. I have a couple Huns I want to do but need more practice first. I remember getting really frustrated as a kid trying to do the metal foil unless I got a smooth mirror finsh, I didn't believe my dad when he said real planes have wrinkles haha. Then I saw a B-52 after I joined the Air Force!

Outstanding work Frank.  Love the NMF.  I have the J, but am waiting for Eduard canopy mask to be available.
