A/C Battles That Never Happened
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, May 10, 2003 9:00 PM
Hello, all out there.

My friends and I (yes, even with modeling, I have friends) were discussing landmark planes the other day, when the topic came up of air combat battles that never took place, whether by alignment during wars, age differences, or other factors. So, I pose the question to you, the experts.

In your opinion, what would be the greatest air-to-air dogfight that never actually took place? The aircraft in question don't necessarily have to be from the same era, mind you. Please, although it was a great movie, no references to "Final Countdown." (If you haven't seen it, GO DO IT!)

My vote would have to be a J7W1 Shinden vs Dornier Do335A/B Pfeil. Just the aerial acrobatics alone would be worth it!

Any takers?

I always thought about the F4U Corsair in the European theater or North African, against a Fw-190 or Bf-109.
Also see a Me-262 smoke a Meteor.
Maybe a German Amerika bomber over New York and the battles that would ensue.

My Dad once told me that some guys in his P-47 squadron were jumped by some Corsair pilots once in a severe case of mistaken identiy. The Jug pilots shot down 3 corsirs for no losses :D.

Dogfight between Spectre gun ships.
Otherwise I too would like to see a Corsair in Europe.

Kolja94, the problem would be... finding two servicable Tornado's at the same time!

Issah:

I believe that Mig-21's ( India ) actually did fight against F-104's ( Pakistan ). From what I recall reading, the Migs came out on top. Since the F-104 was meant to be a pure interceptor and not a dogfighter, the Migs were able to out-maneuver them.

For the record, my wife thinks that she'd really want to see the Red Baron vs Snoopy.

I once played the flight sim USNF agains my best friends brother. I was in an A-4 Skyhawk with cannons and he was in an F-15 fully loaded for air-to-air combat....let's just say it was a good example of how "it's the pilot not the plane." Somehow I was able to come up behind and shoot him down.

Otherwise, I would have liked to see the P-80 or F-80 (what ever it was designated at the time) go up against the Me-262 over Germany. Or maybe against that flying wing the Germans were developing.

A little late into the game but wouldn't a Ki 61Tony vs. Me 109 be more logical??? How about a Ta 152H vs a F4 Corsair

As far I'm aware ( *prepares to be corrected* !) there's never been an F-14/Su-27 interface, now that's something I'd pay a lot of money to watch. Er,from a safe distance obviously, preferably from my own F-14! I can but dream...

WWII: Soviet Yak-9's (I think they were 9's) and USAAF P-51D's.

Okay, this one DID happen, but I doubt a great number of folks know about it. And it was kinda unusual, but nonetheless predictable...

Okay, now for the real hypotheticals...

These are not fantasy dogfights I'd like to see, these actually COULD have occured.

P-80 vs. Me 262 - A couple of early P-80's were deployed to Europe (Italy) during WWII but never saw combat.

F-14A vs. NVAF MiG's - F-14's flew CAP during Operation Frequent Wind when Saigon was being evacuated.

F7F & F8F vs. Japs - Both types arrived literally days late to see combat in the PTO during WWII.

Okay, another one that was highly unlikely but that DID occur: L-4 Grasshopper vs Fi 156 Storch. Can you say stick 'yer Colt .45 out the window and blast those Krauts!? LOL Yes, it did happen...

(No comments about derogatory terminology, please. I'm half Kraut myself, just as I'm half Pollack. And remember, you don't have to be Polish to be a "pollack"...)

Hi there guys!!!
The IAF shot down all four Pakistani F104s(armed with AA missiles and leased from Jordan)! Our MiGs were only armed with crude russian rockets and all the F104s were shot down using GUNS!!!! Hats off to those great warriors!! Thank you JGUIGNARD!! But A Me262 with the Meteor would definitly be worthwhile dogfight!!

Or a MiG29/Su27 with an F16 (Guns only!)!!

Cheers,
Nandakumar

I'd surely take the MiG-21 over the F-104 any day! Funny thing is that both were born from American & Soviet pilots wanting a lightweight high performance fighter after their experience in the Korean war. The Russians certainly got it right. One went on to be the most widely used jet fighter. The other, well, just buy some land and wait. About all I ever thought the F-104 was good for was as an airshow display a/c.
