Posted by ygmodeler4 on Thursday, August 11, 2005 7:22 PM
Im itching to do a P-40 in Boyington's markings while he was in the AVG. Does anybody have any links or any information on where I can get markings for it. Also what kind of P-40 was it?

Pappy flew a P-40B with the Flying Tigers. I think he was in the 3rd squadron. But not for sure on that. Try ther website

Thinks the websit wont load but I found another site http://staff.jccc.net/droberts/p40/p40a.html.
And heres another thing.
A data sheet on the AVG Tomahawks shipped to Rangoon. http://www.warbirdforum.com/hawks.htm. i got a couple questions.
First if you scroll down to February allottment and March Boyingtons planes were used by others? Is that Regular and wich one would be more appropriate? Also what is Mfg# and RAF# ? Black Wolf you probably know this.

YGM I tried these links but didn't connect to the 1st. one seems the page is unavailable.
To answer your question of others using Pappy's plane(s) Yes, he used other planes as well. in the avg, planes were always inneed of repairs from being shot up, mechaniical problems & of course, landing on shot up / bombed out runways. They had to scavenge parts from other birds to stay in the fight.
Ok Black Wolf,... the floorum is YOURS!!Big Smile [:D]Zzz [zzz]

Hope you found what you were looking for from this post so long ago. Doing research myself on the AVG. Boyington was assigned to the First Squadron, flying a Hawk 81-A-2, number "21". The Hawk 81-A-2 was roughly equal to a P-40B. Just finished reading the "Osprey Aircraft of the Aces, #41 - American Volunteer Group Colours and Markings" by Terrill Clements.

Yea, that's probably the best book for what your looking for. Eagle Strike decals did the markings for his plane also. I looked, but couldn't find the sheet no. I used them when I did that plane 5-6 years ago. It's allways a sharp looking bird!
Take this plastic and model it!

Aeromaster also made a set with 1/48 markings for Pappy's Hawk #21.  It was in a packet with a book and decals for dozens of their planes.  The number of the sheet is 48-07 "American Volunteer Group: First American Aces".  Judging from the low part number, it was probably made years ago and may no longer be available.

I actually ordered it last fall. I had to write to them through email to get it, even though the site said out of stock. This is the set here.

I don't recall what email address I used.

I'll look through my set and see if I have enough left-over decals to make up a set. I guess the hardest part is finding the number 21.

Wow thanks guys,

I sorta forgot about this project and moved to a different one but I think I'll start this one now as soon as I clear the bench of some other builds.

I'll try to get ahold of these decals and that book ( an excuse to get more models too!)

Thanks again!

Pappy was assigned to 1st Pursuit Squadron (Adam & Eves) as a Flight Leader and later appointed as Vice Sqn Leader. He flew White 21. He was later on assigned to 3rd Pursuit Squadron (Hell's Angels) but I can find no reference to any particular aircraft number that he flew. He crashed one on takeoff but no reference is made to the number.
