Carriers in Atlantic
Posted by nsclcctl on Wednesday, August 6, 2003 12:44 PM
How active was the carrier war in the Atlantic? Were there Wildcats and Avengers and Dauntless flying off these carriers and if so, what were the color schemes? Did mustangs for instance fly off of carriers?

For the American carriers, the war in the Atlantic was primarily concerned with ASW, though there were some Wildcats that flew in support of Torch. Most of the heavy carrier action was in the Med and by the Brits. The Wildcat and Avenger were the chief players off the "jeep" carriers in the Atlantic. They had a markedly different paint scheme than their pacific brethern, more shades of grey. I'll root around my archives and see what I can find to post here to give you an idea. Another place to check to get more info is the Tailhook Association out of San Diego, they have an extensive history section and I seem to recall an article or two in their mag. "the Hook" a year or two ago that covered this topic.

P.S. Mustang was tested off a carrier (mod'd w/tailhook even) but the long nose made it problematic at best for CV ops.

Here you go:

and:

"An FM-2 of VC-12 taking off from the USS Core (CVE-13), having just dis-engaged from the catapult. The catapult bridle is visible just below the left main gear. The colors on this aircraft are Dark Gull Gray over white. This combination was used for airwings operating mainly in the North Atlantic. It was also carried on TBF/TBM Avengers, F4F-4s and FM-1s, PV-1s and several other types."

Dauntlesses (SBD-4s) flew off the SANGAMON and the RANGER....don't forget the yellow surround that outlined all the stars!

"In the struggle for the North Atlantic, Avengers were credited with destroying 30 submarines. Flying from escort carriers (CVEs), TBFs were well-suited to the sub-killer role with its long endurance and stable, large weapons capacity. They became a vital strike aircraft in the hunter-killer groups that ranged the Atlantic: CVEs flying Avengers and Wildcats with destroyers in support."
