For the American carriers, the war in the Atlantic was primarily concerned with ASW, though there were some Wildcats that flew in support of Torch. Most of the heavy carrier action was in the Med and by the Brits. The Wildcat and Avenger were the chief players off the "jeep" carriers in the Atlantic. They had a markedly different paint scheme than their pacific brethern, more shades of grey. I'll root around my archives and see what I can find to post here to give you an idea. Another place to check to get more info is the Tailhook Association out of San Diego, they have an extensive history section and I seem to recall an article or two in their mag. "the Hook" a year or two ago that covered this topic.
P.S. Mustang was tested off a carrier (mod'd w/tailhook even) but the long nose made it problematic at best for CV ops.
