1:48 Halifax Manufacturer?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 6, 2003 9:00 PM
I recently picked up a Vacu-formed Halifax bomber kit in 1:48 scale, and was wondering who may have manufactured it. It came in the original box, plain white cardboard about 14x17x2" with no identification other than a stick on plain paper label saying what it is and that it is "kit #2".

It makes B and C versions of Marks III, VI, and VIII, but also includes the nose and rudders for earlier marks. There is no resin but a lot of white metal parts in addition to the vacuum formed sheets.

I do know the kit is British, and was supposed to have been bought new by mail order in 1997. Not sure how old it is but the decal sheet has yellowed, so it could have been around longer.

It would satisfy my curiosity if some one could shed light on who might have manufactured the kit.

Thanks and regards in advance.

Probably ID models. They've long since been OOB. They were the ones who specialized in BIG Vac models. Their most popular was a 1/32 B-29 and 1/72 C-5 Galaxy.

more likely to be Contrail, I think they did a Halifax in 1/48. I don't think ID would have included white metal or decals.

Contrail kits don't have a reputation for going together easily, so good luck, I think you're in for an interesting time

Papa:
Thanks for the info. Contrail or ID, who knows for sure, eh?
I have extensively crawled through, photographed, and researched the Halifax B-VI that is being restored at the RCAF museum in Trenton, Ontario. An incredible memorial museum manned by a super bunch of people. They are well into fund raising for a hangar to display the bird in, they probably have another 3 or 4 years to final assembly. This is the aircraft that was recovered from Norway several years ago. It was shot down dropping supplies to the resistance, and in that configuration did not have a MU turret.
I suspect I'll only be using the vacuum formed plastic shell of the kit and maybe some of the white metal parts. I usually scratch build ships so this will be an adventure. I don't plan on starting the kit until next year because of other projects on the go, but the time will be well spent working out details.
Regards.
