Monogam PBY Question
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 10:10 AM
It may sound stupid and a minor detail, but what would be the best color to paint that rope molded on the nose? Would it be more of a tanish-yellow hemp like color or more brown? I was also wondering if it was on actual combat aircraft or not, and if so if it would be in the position it's molded in. There was one big thing I was thinking about on it, and that was the paint scheme. I got the 5A kit which includes decals for SNAFU Snatchers. I knew that she was flown by the USAAF in the Pacific around 1944, but the paint scheme is blue gray over white. I've seen a picture of the real airplane and the one that's painted up like her at the Air Force Museum so I know that it is correct, but I was wondering why she was painted that way. Was blue gray over white an Army Air Force standard paint job for float/patrol planes in that theater? Was it a standard factory como job that I'm just aware of? Was it field applied? It's just something I was curious about.

I would imagine that the base color of the rope depends on how much you weather the airframe. The myriad crevases in the rope would embed dirt, and the salt water would also take its toll. Washes and dry brushing with different shades will only add "realism." For a base color, something like Testors wood could be a match. Washes of a wood/dark red mix and dry brushings of progressively lighter base color will add depth. That's how I plan to do mine, once I get more display space ! (The fuselage & wings are done, not mated, and awaiting paint !)

Actually the "rope" was a braided stainless steel cable, so it was metallic gray in color, but my references mainly show it in black from a distance, like Pixilater said, all the elements would take their toll. As to the color standard, the Blue-Gray was standard until 1943, then it changed to a Tri-color, Gloss Sea Blue over Intermediate Blue, with White undersurfaces. There is a Website dedicated to the 2nd ERS. There is the place to look for the color that this bird was. I will get back to you on the website.

The "rope" is called the anchor pendant. It's a steel cable attached to the keel, the anchor line was clamped to it. Squadron/Signal's Catalina Walk Around show's only a few good shots of it and it looks close to the Monogram mold. One shot is in color of a well used Cat getting a fresh water wash and the cable looks black with very little corrosion. The paint is blue-gray on top but the undersie looks more light gray than white.
