Actually the "rope" was a braided stainless steel cable, so it was metallic gray in color, but my references mainly show it in black from a distance, like Pixilater said, all the elements would take their toll. As to the color standard, the Blue-Gray was standard until 1943, then it changed to a Tri-color, Gloss Sea Blue over Intermediate Blue, with White undersurfaces. There is a Website dedicated to the 2nd ERS. There is the place to look for the color that this bird was. I will get back to you on the website.
