Hi T.L.
Johnnie Johnson flew different Mk IX Spitfires and finished up actually on "low back" Mk XIVe's. As for his most famous Mk IX, it was an early IX with the early style air intake and elevators and the double cannon blisters. S/N was EN398. There are many photos of this a/c that have been published and many colour profiles done of it too although the artists invariably get the Maple Leaf logo carried below the windscreen wrong. The leaf was red, NOT green. Johnnie led the Kenly wing with this Mk IX in 1943. This Mk IX is reputedly the highest scoring IX ever.
He later led 144 and 127 wings with a later LF Mk IXc S/N MK392, which was converted to a IXe later in the year 1944. This one had the later style elevators, Aero Vee air intake, single blister cannon covers, and hemisherical mirror. He was very successful with this Mk IX and flew her into 1945.
I suggest getting the Osprey Publication "Late Marque Spitfire Aces 1942-45" by Dr. Alfred Price and "Spitfire-The Canadians" by Robert Bracken (a friend of mine).
1/32nd scale is very lacking in Spitfire decals for any Mark. I suggest getting in touch with Mike Grant <<http://www.cadvision.com/mikegrant/MikeGrantDecals/>>
who makes excellent custom decals. Johnnie Johnson's Mk IX Spitfires would be a cinch for him to do for you.
What conversion set are you using to make a 1/32nd scale Mk IX? Warbird Productions?
E-mail me direct if you have any questions.
Cheers
Bob S.
