Helldiver finsihed PICS....... finally!
Posted by wing_nut on Friday, December 7, 2007 11:08 AM

First I want to thank Wulf and chukw for the fantastic work on their Helldivers that gave me the push I needed to finish mine.  I realize now what made me wait. It had to be the Vac canopy.  I found myself trying to find things to do on the model to push off the canopy.  This is really my 1st vac canopy with any complexity.  And since I only had one shot to get it right I waited ‘til the last minute.  Overall not bad but the canopy is one of the areas I would like to have done better. There are a few gaps at the windscreen.  But I see why folks use them… nice and thin and a good look.

The model depicts an aircraft off the Essex in about April’45.  There was a decal sheet for it but it is OOP.  The kit sheet came with a 702 in white so all I had to do was cut it up and reverse the digits and make the black one for the tail.  The wing and tail graphics are masked and painted.

Thanks for looking.  Comments and critiques welcome.

Great Helldiver.

Is it the Pro Modeler/AM 1/48th kit? Is the life raft detail included in the kit or is that a personal touch?

Excellent work as usual, Marc! I really like the lines of that aircraft, and I love the green gear struts! Big Smile [:D] Thinking that I may have to add one to my collection someday.

Excellent work as always Marc!  Especially the cockpit, looks like someone could climb right in and start her up.  DEFINATELY worthy of the O.T.T.

Thank you all for such nice comments.

The kits the 1/48 Accurate Miniatures rebox.

I had no idea what the raft looks like but the empty tube wouldn't look right.  It is made from fold and rolled lead foil.

Chris, I just noticed your avatar.  Is your opinion jadedWhistling [:-^]Wink [;)]

Charles, I was just reading something the other day that said the Helldiver did not perform as well as originally hoped but the wheels had been put in motions and logistically could not be reversed.

arki30... so ugly it's pretty.

Marc,

Haven't been around for awhile and maybe it's just me, but I think your painting/weathering skills are getting better (not to say they weren't phenomenal before!).  It looks great! Thank you for showing us this wonderful build.

Thnaks guys for the kind words.

Mike, was your dad on a carrier or did he fly the beast?

Mark, I vac the little piece just at the tail and the seciton that house the raft.  The rest is the Falcon canopy but those 2 piece weren't even close as far as fit.

My dad was crew chief on SB2C Helldivers at El Toro, CA in the Marine Corps in 1944.

He went AWOL to see some "Hot WAC" as he told me only to find out she had shipped out the day before. He lost a rank and they sent him to the South Pacific to help bring wounded home from Iwo Jima, Guam, Saipan, The Marianas Islands, Guam and Quadulane.

After the war he was an aircraft mechanic at Alameda NAS and worked on F6F's, C-47's and many other radial engine aircraft. My dad was a master mechanic extraordinaire and I am not just saying that because he was my dad. He was really that good and men like him are far and few between these days.

Yeah... sorry he's not around to see it.... Forget that...just be with you.  At least you about what your dad did.  My folks got divorced when I was 9, 52 now, and all I know wasmy dad was in Italy.  No details.  I have the tunic from his uniform. He died young, in his 40'sa. I was 16 or 17.

nice work wing nut. I like the weathering on the white. The work around the landing gears and the oil stains are a nice touch.

Very well done Marc. Looks like you did a great job of dealing with the issues as well. I like the detail of the life raft tube above the radios. I could not make it fit on mine so, I omitted it. It was too late to move and adjust the radio boxes. Glad you decided to finish her off. Kudos....
