Diuker – Great that you have a dedicated room. I have accumulated about a dozen 1:350 ship projects that will have to wait till I have more space to build them, much less display them (yes, I also have the Konig and Vayrag; also the Mikasa, Olympia and Dreadnaught for wwi era ships; love those old battlewagons).

Well, My wife told me that when I make more big models, she would leave. There are days I miss her... (really!!)

The dedicated room is my living room. I mean, I spend a lot of time and money to make pieces of art, so why do I have to places these works on a shelf somewhere hidden.

For the "old" models, I think they are more nece than the modern era ships. That are big chunks of floating plastic and aluminium! I make only 1:350 so you can compare the size of the ships together. I once made the Revell Dresden, when I also was working on the Yamato. When I had to make some room on my desk to repair something I layed the hull of the Dresden on the aircraft part of the Yamato. It did fit!

That Dresden was lost in action (Long story..) so I got a new one. And also a 350 Cutty Sark sailing ship.

But don't think I only have big projects, I have several 1:144 planes on the shelf...

After almost two weeks I manage to post my choice: a Ki-46 interceptor, in 1/48 by Tamiya.

For the first time I will experiment with some PE goodies for the cockpit (waiting to have them delivered soon).

The builds I see in this topic are awesome, especially that Ki-84 is scarily realistic, like it's going to strafe you anytime.

Zvezda: I built one of the other versions of that kit, falls together- one of the best kits I've ever done.

Waynec: Very cool, I'm going to have to pick up one of those myself one day.

I got most of the paint laid down on the Zero Egg fighter, now I need to get the yellow leading edge stripes done, hopefully photos soon.

Mark, is this the new tool Yamato or the old one?

I use Eduard etching and have Master Model barrels. I thought the Lion Roar was too expensive, but when I calculate my expenses, it does not matter so much anymore..

Man, that is going to be a cool ship! Looks like more PE then plastic! Cant wait to see it comming together. Any way... finished up my Frank yesterday just in time to tune in to The Walking Dead! Thanks Nathan, I'm spoiled by the 32nd scales, But still like a 48th every now and then.I just like the detail you can pack into a 24th or 32nd, thats why I do more exterior detali to the 48th.Any way, your 190 coming along good ! Take care...

Hello all, I finished my Ki-84.  It's the Hasegawa kit in 1/48 scale.  To review, its a great kit and very detailed right from the box.  I rank it right up there with the recent Tamiya kits.  To enhance it further, I added an Ultracast seat, drilled out the wing cannons and added brake lines.  I also rigged up the Ha-45 radial, but unlike a P-47, this is unfortunately hard to see through the cowl once the prop is added.  Now I know for next time.   I used Sky Decals to represent Major Kawamoto's Hayate of the 50th Sentai from April of 1945.  He was an 8 kill ace.

Unfortunately my wing streaking weathering techinque was hidden by my normal process of gloss coat, decals, panel line wash, and dullcoat.  I should have done it more pronounced.  Well, sometimes you get the bull...sometimes it gets you.  This is a touch and go technique, hence the reason I usually go overboard on initial application.  I'm still pleased with the way it turned out and it still cane be seen slightly.  I used a silver pencil for some chipping at the wing root and some select panels.  Its not that I can't do the "silver undercoat/ tape rip off technique" to simulate paint peel of late Japanese subjects, I even tried it on a N1K1 George once and it worked.  The thing is, I just hate the way it looks!  I'll just stick with the light chipping in sporadic places.  Well here it is and thanks for having me.  Questions and comments are always welcome.

You did a great job Joe. The streaking/fading came out great I think, subtlety is the key sometimes. Wish I wasn't so backed up on group builds, I really want to dive in the the Ki-100. I like the way your decals came out. They look painted on and match the plane very well.

Joe: Wow! She looks fantastic! The streaking looks great to me, the complex tail decals went down perfectly, and I love the base. I have to agree, I'm not a big fan of the whole beaten and chipped half to death look I've seen on a lot of Japanese models. Seems to me earlier in the war they got much better maintenance and late they were being shot down so fast I'd doubt many would get much weathering. I'm sure there were plenty of worn-out fighters like Doug's aircraft but still beating the krap out of every one seems a little overkill unless you have a reference like Doug that shows clearly how beaten up the plane was. Your model looks a little dirty and sun-faded but not overdone- pretty darn near perfect to me!

My only complaint is you, Bsyamato, and Doug are setting the bar so high I'm not sure how the rest of us are going to compare

very nice builds. the bar is high so move the field like i will do. just picked up the trumpeter JGSDF TYPE 82 6x6 to go with TYPE 96B (in progress) 8x8 and TYPE 87 6x\6 recon for 50% off. practicing masking for multi color camo on an old JGPZ-IV. can't get the silly putty to stick and modeling clay leaves residue to clean off. will try blue tack next. at least its on the skirts and easy to strip down and redo.

That will be a cool looking build!  In the past when trying to do rings, stripes or multi colors I've had pretty good success with Abteilung 502 liquid canopy mask. It takes a while to cure, but remains rubbery when acrylics are used, haven't tried with enamels so couldn't suggest that with any certainty... It rubs off easily and applies with a brush if desired, laquer thinner does a good job of cleaning the brush afterwards.

Looking forward to those Waynec. Funny I've never had any problems with Silly Putty sticking though. Hans von Hammer was recommending rubber cement- not sure how it would work on a large scale though.

maybe i got a bad batch of silly putty.

got most of the hull done except for handrails and fiddley stuff like that. past experience has shown i will break these unless i put them on just before priming. also, if i use tape, it makes it easier to tape.

found some cool camo pics of trumpeter PLA semi DF-21 CSS-5 ICBM the so-called carrier killer and some interesting pics of a cuban camo SAM-2 on T-55 chassis that looks like an easy conversion. who is going to know?
