Looking good there. What color paints are you using?

 

Rob...thanks for the paint tips. Will probably have to order my paints on line since my local Hobby Town is usually out of the colors I need everytime I run by there.

Was viewing the Eduard PE set for this ship and I got my work cut out here. Been cutting off some of the areas the instructions said to do. Trying to figure out the best means of tackling the PE...install it first then paint the camo scheme or after it's painted then touch up the PE? One thing about the PE set, it shows just how much the manufactured omitted from the model.

I am pretty much done with the Hornet. I need to install all the wiring and the PE railings. The PE railings are still on route via the mail, so, I can't get that done until they arrive.

And the first off the slipways. Really good painting you did on the Hornet, Rob.

Thanks Checkmate...yes, it seems fast in terms of days since I started, but, as I work in a different city from which my family resides, I have LOTS of time on my hands!! LOL

An outstanding job there Rob, I really like that deck weathering you did.

Great build there Rob, really nice work. And you can really see how tricky it must have been to get those bombers off the deck.

I started detaching pieces from sprues on New Year's, and I'm still stuck on filling ejector pin marks and sanding!

 

Guess I'm lucky because the Trumpeter Triconderoga has all their ejector marks on the inside of the walls, would have been a chore if I were to display the entire hanger deck. As it is, I decided to drill out the port holes on the island and open up a few door hatches. Jury is out if I want to try opening any of the hanger rolling side doors.

The HORNET and her airwing look great!  Very nice job on the paint!!!

Here's a few progress update pics.

Doing some parts removal to make way for the PE.

I took a break from working on the hull and jump to playing with the Island I didn't think I would be doing this so to speed up the build but I couldn't resist drilling out the port holes and open up a few hatchways.

Slowly coming together.

Looks a little naked without the PE which I will soon be adding. Encounter another fit issue with the forward tub on top of the bridge roof. With the upper gun tub and searchlight assembly installed, the forward tub locator pin doesn't line up placing the part nearly off the edge of the bridge roof.

Forgot how much I enjoyed building ship models but hats off to Rob for doing one in 1/700, think that's a bit too small for my old eye balls.

looks great AS! Yes, the 1/700 is quite small and it was a challenge for my fat fingers!

Well, no pictures yet, I'm having issues with photobucket, but I did get started on CV-60 today.  This is the old Revell kit of the SARATOGA.  I'm building her straight out of the box.  A lot of the parts are off the trees so it's time consuming finding the right part.  There's not a lot of positive place marks for where some of the sponsons go on the side of the hull!  So it's kind of interesting trying to get everything where it's supposed to be.  This is my first ship in years, usually I build aircraft.  Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to post a before work photo and a WIP or 2.  Keep up the good work!

Forgot how much I enjoyed building ship models

I also forgot just how tiny PE in /1350 scale is too, and how they can get away from you. Had a couple of close calls though nothing lost yet. Will post a couple of progress pics tomorrow.

Beautiful Build of the Hornet Rob and my pleasure you could join us. Congrats on being first off the Block. Great work from all other Builders so far. The Hyuga is finally finished so I thought I could get underway with mine. Another look at the Kit threw me off as it was badly warped and some damaged Parts. So I have decided to ditch the Independence and go with another one I was seriously considering. And this is the choice.......

I have ordered the Photo-Etch Set for it Yesterday so should get it this Week and then I am off and Building......Cheers mark

Thanks for that Mark!! Great choice..i think that's the way I want to go for future carriers...jet fighters! Too many fiddly parts and props for my fat fingers with past 1/700 carriers. I have a Admiral Kuznetsov in my pile that I'll take on some year.

I got all of the sponsons on the SARATOGA.  The hull is ready for putty and paint now.  Here's some before and after pics.

Huge-looking hull, scorpr2.  Proceeding very well.

After about a month of cleaning parts, I finally got some glue and parts together.

First, the kit box and pieces.  

Yorktown is pretty much a retread of Tamiya's Enterprise and Hornet, with (I guess) some extra sprues.  

There were quite a few parts left over.

Also picked up some references.

The Yorktown class book was not overly helpful.  Didn't have as many photos or diagrams from the angles I was looking for.

 The ship building book has some useful suggestions.

I started with the hull yesterday.

Great looking boats, everyone!

And so all it takes is the first cut.  I mapped out the waterline "keel" on the Chakri Naruebet.

I hope to start the Big E this week and hopefully we can build in tandem so we can join Rob's Hornet.  Be cool to be done in time for Midway eh? You said the Yorktown has extra sprues, of what?  Also, I guess the island is the same as the Hornet the Enterprise kits?   I'm having a hard time with using the Tamiya island vs kitbshing it, especially the bridge windows. What are your plans if any?  Scott
