Auto GB
Posted by williamsfw28 on Thursday, December 4, 2008 12:18 PM
Ok guys I dont know why it but seems the GB just die when it come to autos..? I know I had family problems right as the endurance GB took off and set me back a few months plus then it seems I got some type of modelers block where I want to build everything and couldnt focus on one model type I seem to think there all cool... Armor, planes, ships and even anime but all its done is stop me from building anything. I think one reason is Armor and Plane GB seem to have so much life and they are aways helping each other out with tips and trick I just want to be part of the type of build. So that all being said here are some ideas for a Jan 1st to Jun 1st GB

1... WRC?
2... F1 ?
3... Make it a race car...
4... Moto GP
5.. Le Mans 80's & 90's

What are your thoughts????

ok....come on folks....give autos a try.  Maybe a WRC GB so the armor guys can weather it up....mud, scratches...or build something nice and shiney.....your choice.  We've seen what Doog can do with weathering a car-truly a work of art.  And there are a lot of great modelers in these forums....dive in...try something different....

I could be game possibly for a Make it a Race Car GB. I am assuming that pretty much any race car would fit in to it (i.e.-dirt track cars or NASCAR)? I haven't built an auto in a while any they are a bit quicker to put togther so it might be a nice break from the armor and aircraft.

A thought about Auto GBs. Especially with a race car subject, knowledge about a certain car or area could be based on a region a lot. For example; Lets take the current Bf-109 GB for instance (first one that came to my head that I am involved in). Most everyone with any aircraft knowledge has at least heard of the 109 and there are a lot of people from all over that know a lot about it. Region doesn't really matter. It is known world-wide. With race cars, knowledge is kind of based on the region of the builder. Someone from Daytona Beach probably knows a lot more about Daytona than someone from Oregon lets say. I am sure that most race fans in California have never heard of Reading Fairgrounds in PA. Most of my knowledge on race cars is confined to the northeast region of the country and confined even more to mostly dirt track. I know very little about other areas and other racing types like Rally or F1 compared to dirt track. It would be a chance to learn about other areas but could be holding some back because their lack of knowledge on the subject. Just my My 2 cents [2c].

I see your point and i agree with it... Tigers, Mustangs and Military stuff in general have a better core fallowing. And your right here in the states for the most part Nascar, NHRA and Dirt track racing is going to have more of a following then say something like Formula One or Moto GP. I was a HUGE fan of Nascar in the 80's and early 90's but started making the switch to more of the racing set on the World stage and have not looked back.
I know WRC, F1, Lemans and Moto GP are something that most Americans cant relate to but I guess thats one reason to bring it to life. The kits for the most part arent bad in price and the older one are really cheap if you can find one. Hobby Lobby sells Moto GP and F1 kits and with that 40% off coupon you can get a 40 dollar kit for close to twenty bucks.

Bob was so right to say that there are some amazing builders on here and Ive seen Doggs (Sorry Dogg for using your name with out asking) work hes an amazing artist no doubt and would love to see him build a WRC car thats been put through the ringer but would he be willing or even have the time? He and the rest of then (you) could apply there skills to something thats not the norm for them and teach new tricks to the rest of us.

I dont want anyone to think because it foreign to them that they shouldnt take the plunge but I know what you talking about. I want so bad to build the FW190s, Panthers, Abrams and Stykers but dont feel I know enough and have seen people get nit picked on here because they missed something. It keeps me in the cars because I know them.

Im just looking to breath some life back into autos..

Dustin-First off, thanks for trying to breath some life back into the auto GB's.  I started with cars-specifically drag racers-many years ago before moving to aircraft & armor.

Secondly, don't be afraid to jump into a airplane or armor GB.  The crowd here has always been helpful, encouraging and willing to share techniques that take us all to the next level.  And that's how we all improve-one build at a time.  And these GB's are a great way to learn about your subject/interest.  There are a couple of good ones going on now that I'll be hanging around in once I finish two current projects-The Red Storm on the Reich, Mig Killers II & the bf109-Defenders of the Reich have a good group of folks participating.  And you're too good of an auto builder not to branch out and try something that you want to.

As a side note, I find autos to be the hardest since they generally require a perfect paint job.  A tank or plane can be weathered!

thank you Bob !!! Im sure in time Im going to build a few military vehicles Ive been kicking the idea around with the 190 and I keep buying the darn things. One reason Im not in a big hurry is I know Ill be moving here in a bit and its easier to move a bunch of cars.

Your right about painting but Im still going to give this a shot and if its you, me and a few others then so be it.

WRC seems to be the one with a small lead here. Now i was hoping the other idea might get some following. Muscle vs Tuner vs Exotic GB but will see.

I vote for a general race car build.  I can pretty much go anywhere with that build F1, Indy, NASCAR, IMSA, Can-Am, drag racing.  Been away from pits way too long.

EDIT:  Bob, saw your post about needing a perfect paint job to do cars.  You do for a show car, but most race cars as built aren't that.  Race cars as rule have a nice enough, smooth paint job.  This is one of my pet peeves when going to a contest and seeing a racecar with a miles deep paint job under many layers of gloss, they just don't look like that. Just do a smooth paint job and you'll be ok.  Race cars can be weathered as well.

Race Car GB....
Posted by williamsfw28 on Sunday, December 7, 2008 3:26 AM

Lewbud is right and I think the best way to get some kind of Auto group build is to make it a anything and everything Race Car build.. ???

This might be a good way to get more auto builders and even some armor and plane guys over.. I know we tried it before but what the heck.

WRC is still a good choice and i would rather it have a single style theme but.. thoughts anyone? Maybe a sub GB with the WRC cars in the race car build???

I, for one, would be a definite starter in a race car GB. If it becomes specific to a category of racing, then it would have to be in my interest bracket to appeal to me.

Any others ?

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Auto GB sounds like a good idea.  I don't think I would have time to get involved.  But for my two cents.  Why not just throw the GB open to build a car, any type of car - race car, plain jane out of the box, etc.  Racing cars could scare some off, especially when they are trying to duplicate the colours, put on mega decals.

Wet the interest just build a car.  Maybe a person would like to build just a car with no fancy frills, or they may like the looks of a particular model - mustang, t-bird, 50's 60's vintage or maybe they like the PINTO Mischief [:-,]No need for a fantastic pristine paint job, just have fun.

I'm not the fastest builder, nor the sharpest builder, not the best painter, but I am having some fun.

Boogity, Boogity, Boogity, lets go building.

Ah what the heck make it a year long GB - Auto GB 101 and I might be tricked into joining.

John-I wouldn't be against seeing an "all inclusive auto GB" if it would generate enough involvement to 'hang' here in the GB forum.  However, that would be Dustin's call, since the Rally Car GB is up and running over in the Auto section.

btw-my first car was a 1973 Pinto Hatchback.  Metallic blue, 2 liter engine w/4-speed, front disc brakes, aluminium wheels, radial tires, sport suspension....and an 8 track tape player.....ah...life was soooo much simpler in those days....

Bob,

Mine was a 73 Pinto wagon.  White, brown interior, 2.0 with the 4 spd.  Paid all of 25.00 back in 83 for it.  You're right about things being simpler.  My dad or I could fix anything on that car, junkyard parts were cheap plus just fun to visit.  Got to where I could change the timing belt in under an hour (it liked to eat them, got lucky until I moved to Dallas. On the way up from San Antonio it ate one, hung a valve and blew the head gasket. Sold to an older gentleman that liked to work on cars for 50.00).  Don't even think about working on my 03 Stang, when I do I lie down til the urge passes.
