Star Wars GB
Posted by Boba Fett on Sunday, December 14, 2008 3:37 PM

Welcome to the first (and I hope not the last) Star Wars group build. Before I set down the rules, I just wanna say that if you see this and any spark of interest hits you, please join up. I think that this would be an excellent build for anyone, even you die-hard armor/ship/aircraft guys. If you don't think you would be interested, first take a look at this list, at http://www.starwarsmodels.com/models.html and I'm sure that there's something for everyone! This build would be an excellent place to try out new weathering, painting, and building techniques as Star Wars stuff is usually beat up, unevenly painted, and heavily detailed. If you just want to do something that you've never tried before, this is the perfect opportunity! You'll have plenty of time to complete the build so don't worry about being rushed! And also, if you join up, you will not be labeled a Star Wars nerd! I cover that area just fine for ya... Alright fellas, the rules follow:

This will be a one year event, lasting from Jan 1st ‘09, and ends December 31st ‘09.

Enrollment will last from now until July 1st so even if you sign up late, You will still have plenty of time to complete your project.

All kits must be unstarted, but if you've clipped a few pieces off the sprue and glued them, no worries. (but until Jan 1st, no touchy!)

Crossovers allowed, as long as they are unstarted.

Please post pics of the builds and share your progress, remember, we are here to learn!

During this build, you can do as many projects as you want, but I want to focus on quality, not quantity. This means that you can throw whatever scratch built and aftermarket detail at it that you please. If you want to do a basic build, at least try to do something small like what Aaron Skinner did last issue with the Slave 1, added new power cables to the laser cannons. If you want to go nuts, be my guest!

Also, I encourage the weird and wacky! Try something outside of the normal gray and red X-wing, and maybe read a few books to get ideas. A prime example: the X-wing series by Michael A. Stackpole has a character, Corran Horn, who flys a gray and green X-wing. Or you could go off the deep end and try the "pirate" Rouge Squadron with a kyat dragon fighter for Gavin Darklighter or Wedge's green/gold chekerboard fighter. Maybe even an "ugly" fighter mating the engines of a Y-wing to a TIE cockpit ball. The possibilities are endless! And if you scratch builders wanna join up, maybe do something that has never been kitted until now! The possibilities are endless! I will allow just about anything that says, "Star Wars" on it. (note: if you want to do some research, Google Wookiepedia and use it to find just about any Star wars think you can imagine!)

Ok guys, here's the badge. Thank You Aggieman! Everybody, claim your badge when you sign up. If you already have, add it to your signature. Just host it on your own photobucket account.

Finally, I will say, HAVE FUN!!!!! This build is not about rivet-counting, it's about learning and enjoying yourself.

And finally/finally, go easy on me! It's my first time leading a GB!

I'll get in on this.

I have an AMT X-Wing in the stash I've been meaning to build for a while. I even took it out of the box and washed all the parts off about a year ago, but that's all I've done to it.

This will give me a good reason to build it. Smile [:)]

I'll probably build this OOB, I'm not big on aftermarket add-on doo-dads. But if I can scratch build some details, I'll do that. I will focus on some heavy weathering, and maybe some light battle damage.

Thanks Dmk! Spread the word! You get honors of being behind the Fett man... Smile [:)] Yaknow, If you wanna add this to "No excuses GB" it would be the perfect subject! This way, ya get 2 badges for 1 model! About building it, yeah, try some scratching! I love the little details you add yourself. And as I suggested, maybe try a different paint job!

I'll get in with an old AMC X-Wing - been in the stash for far too long.  I also have some of the FM kits (X- & Y-Wings, TIE Fighter) but I'll save those builds for another time.  Would love to get my hands on that FM Millennium Falcon but the wife would be quite displeased if I was to part with those dollars ...

I put together a quick potential badge.  If the group elects to use it please host it in your own account.

I'll bet we're going to have a lot of X-wings. I think I will do something other than red markings.

I never read any of the books (other than Splinter in the mind's eye). Were there other squadron colors on X-wings in the Star Wars universe?

Hey I'd like to join too. I haven't decided on the model yet- leaning to either a Tie interceptor or a Y-wing. I will let you know later. OOB is not ok? Well I'll be counting on some tips from you, Boba F., for tips on things to add to jazz it up.

Alright, I'm in. I'm going to build Obi-wan's Jedi Starfighter from episode III, using the AMT/Ertl kit.

It will be mostly stock, but I will improve the kits faults w/ some basic scratchbuilding.

i'm just now getting back on the board after a couple of weekends trooping with the 501st, so I am down for this.

Put me down for an ARC 170 heavy fighter. I plan to open and detail as much as I can on the kit.

Welcome: wingform84, btp2k2, MaxSheridan, Jmart, amilder, ssgkopp, dnatech, Cosmic J, and PatlaborUnit1, to the GB! You have made a kid very happy today! Smile [:)] Santa will drop a lotta stuff down the chimney Christmas... Sorry that I haven't been able to add you until now, I barely got the post up, much less add you guys. If you sign up late in the evening (at least for Wisconsin,) I probably won't add you till afternoon or evening next day.

Mist086: There probabily was a blue/grey X-wing but I think you're thinking of Blue Squadron, an A-wing squadron that flew with (at the time, later to be Wraith) gray squadron at Folor. That is in the X-wing series, but Aaron Allston's part of the series. You also might be thinking of Corran's green Cor-sec X-wing. But hey, I did say to get creative! Go for it!

Aggieman, Love the badge! If everyone likes it, we will adopt it! Thanks much!

Wingform84: Yeah! I'd love to see it lit up!

Dmk: There were al lotta squadrons! Rogue, Wraith, Talon (Talon only lasted 1 mission, it was annilated and the squad leader, Myn Donos, was the only survivor who later joined Wraith), Later, during Yuzzhan Vong invasion, there was, Twin suns, Blackmoon, and a few more.

Btp2k2: Great! That's a fun kit to build and there's rome for detail. If you want, I'll link you to my falcon I posted in Sci-fi.
MaxSheridan: Can't choose? Build ‘em all! Seriously, you can enter more than 1 if you want to.

Jmart: Snaps are fine by me! All's that I might add is that if you wanna fill seams, go ahead!

Amilder: Oh no, straight outta the box is fine! I was just trying to encourage detailing as Star Wars kits are the perfect place to do so! About the interceptor, I've heard that the cockpit ball really stinks. I've been told that take the much better regular TIE by AMT and stick the interceptor's wings on there. I've never built the Y-wing but it seems like a nice kit. Maybe kitbash an ugly with the two? Y-wing cockpit with interceptor wings? If you need scale reference, go to my link.

Dnatech: AT-AT is fun to build!

Cosmic J: Question on the kit, I thought Revell made that?

PatlaborUnit1: Alright! The 501st guy joins up! Great! Can't wait to see all that Detail!

Thanks again guys! It will be awesome to see this stuff!

EDIT: oops, I saw where Aggieman already posted a badge, my bad.I'm going to leave it up since I spent an hour on it Big Smile [:D]

Graham, Ok thanks, I was just not sure how much extra stuff I can or should add to my first non-aircraft, non-armor build. I don't, um, actually have a kit yet, but I'm thinking of a Finemolds TIE interceptor. I will let you know.

Republic star destroyer. Revell.

Heres my falcon on starshipmodeller.com

http://www.starshipmodeler.com/starwars/tb_rog_falcon.htm

Ps. the Star destroyer is started but not in the manner of what I'd call properly started. The guts of it are still on the sprues. I will be getting stuck in this week. I hope to have this finished before new year.

I must thankyou for this great idea, I really want to be included. I have 2 finemolds X-wings 2 Tie fighters, Jedistarfighter, ESB Slave 1, Y-wing. and more Revell Falcons.

Please PM me if this is OK. or you can mail me at terry35@gmail.com .

Graham Thanks again for a great Idea, it will distract me from my T34 for a while.

Regards,

Terry Burke.

Hey, Aggieman. Real quick. Could you resize the badge to be smaller? I tried hosting it on photobucket and resizing it, but it was still big. Also, could I badger you into making the "Star Wars GB" text a little bigger? It's hard to see when small (I saw it small on my icon list on photobucket). Or you could cut a little off the picture's bottom (without removing anything but black) and putting it under there. Your choice! Just post it on the thread, Fett approves it, and life goes on! Thanks!

They made one too. The AMT/Ertl kit is nicer, but doesn't come w/ a pilot. Here's a review:

Boba Fett I know you said en-rolment last till July, but would it be possible to pencil me in and i will confirm later. I am dieing to get in on this but am already commited to 4 GB's, plus 1 more i am in the middle of. And being in the forces i never know if i am going to get sent off anywhere. If i knew i would be home all year i could deffinatly commit. I hav built a couple of Star Wars kits in the past, mainly AMT. But i am seriously looking at a Fine Molds TIE, so would enter with that once i get it and i know i could finish it in time.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Hey, Aggieman. Real quick. Could you resize the badge to be smaller?

I'll tweak it when I get a bit of time, probably later this week.

Cosmic J: Ok. I thought only Revell did that kit. Isn't the AMT screw put-together or something? Doesn't DQ you from the GB but I was just wondering. Happy building!

Bish: No prob. I have you down and will add your kits whenever you feel like you can commit. My friend's dad is in the military and he told me what it's like to be sent over at any time. No worries! You are more than welcome to join!
