Let's do a "What if" GB
Posted by Pavlvs on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 1:37 AM
I mentioned this earlier. I would like to do a "What if" group build. I read about the possibility of Boeing re-engining the B-52 fleet with four big turbofans That inspired me to start this GB. I read about the Navy replacing the #2 turret with a VLS system or many other things. My brother did a P-38 with Corsair radial engines and made up a story of how a P-38 pilot emergency landed at Vella la Cava island (cf Black Sheep) and had to have the radials installed to get back to home base.

So, Here Goes! The rules are these.

1. the "what if" must be a PHYSICAL alteration (not just markings or paint).

2. the builder must tell a story (real or imagined) to explain the alterations.

3. the model may be of a real prototype that was never built (e.g., USS Montana or proposed but not yet realized alteration such as the 4 engined B-52 or the Lexington as the Battle Cruiser instead of the CV)

4. the model may be anything that moves: Car, Truck, Plane, Ship, Tank, AFV, etc.

5. there must have never been an actual living prototype of your model.

6. Crossovers are fine as long as these rules are kept.

Due to all of the GBs going on, I will set the start date at April 1. April Fools Day!

No starting before that. The end date will be Dec. 31

Awesome Pavlvs. Glad to see you got this going. First off though, are cross-over builds allowed? I am planning to convert a 1/35 Dragon Kingtiger to a what-if Kingtiger II for the Endgame 1946 GB that I could include in this. I also have a Hasegawa 1/72 Mig-25 that I kind of messed up on (first major putty experience) that I would do this to:

Just let me know and the Kingtiger and I will decide about another build. I have a full-page list of "what-ifs" I have to choose from.

And can you elaborate on this part a little:

Edit-

Just a couple of suggestions too. You might want to use the ordered list button or the unordered list button just below and to the right of the smiley button to your rules and the list of participants to make it a little easier to see who is building what. You might also want to but names in bold print. I know what it is like though to design your first GB. It took me a good hour and a half to make the first post on my Endgame 1946 GB which is on currently going on. I have also been playing around with a badge. If you want to see it, let me know and I will post it or send it to you. Just trying to help out.

Crossovers are just fine. I'll add it to the original post. Glad to see someone signing on. Can I put you down for a 1946 King Tiger II?

My computer is a Mac and I have no smilies or a menu bar for that matter.

I would love to see your badge. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Is the fact that this is my first organized GB that obvious?

It isn't that obvious that this is your first organized build, it is just that you said it over in the aircraft section. If I can be of any help just let me know. Here is the badge I was playing around with:

As for the King Tiger II, yes, you can put me down for that. Time permitting, I might do another build. I was thinking of doing the Mig-25 Strella I posted above or a Super Tiger(Tiger I with sloped front armor and an 88mm L/71 gun from a King Tiger) as I currently have the parts to do those. We will see. I am just glad you got this going. I like the fact that the builder can design their own build.

Ok guys I couldn't hold back any longer. Here is the one and only "what if " I built a few years back. Thought you might get a kick out of it and maybe stir up your imagination.

That is really cool zipmeister! The P-40 fuselage looks right at home with the Me-262 wings and jets.

That is sweet, Zip. My great uncle was a Flying Tiger. I think he would have drooled over that ship. It looks entirely at home in reality. Are you going to do another for this GB?

No I'm sorry I can't but thanks for the offer and kind words about the "Thunder Kitty". I can no longer work with 1/48 and 1/32 is kinda pricey to be kit bashing. This is my one hit wonder but, I hope it helped with your GB. I will be following this GB it's great to see what people come up with.

Count me in.Smile [:)] I just got done tearing apart a B-58 Hustler to make a USN version. I'll put into mothballs until the assigned date. My Hustler was planned to be shore based, but if I can work it out, I'll try to make it carrier worthy. I mean, if they could land a Viggie, why not a Hustler?Whistling [:-^]

In in on this. don't know what with yet but with a mind as twisted as mine I am sure I will think of something. All I do know is it will be an aircraft of some sort.

All the best.

I'm in-in-in.  Have to pick a subject, but I'm in.  Eddie has mentioned this over at the What If website, too, so you may have a whole invasion of Whiffers coming your way for this GB.

Sorry for my hiatus. I just got out of the hospital where I received a gastric bypass. I had no access to the "cortex" while I was there. I hope your heads are buzzing with the possibilities here. I cannot wait to see the Navy B-58. If they can land a C-130 on the Forrestal, They can land a Hustler. Glad to be back.

Eddie, Cool What if Badge. Everyone, go ahead and use it if it is OK with Eddie.

Good to see you back Pavlvs. Hope you have a good and speedy recovery! My mind has been full of a lot of projects that I would eventually like to do maybe after the King Tiger II, Mig-25 Strella, and the Super Tiger. A Me-262 two-seat bomber destroyer, a Me-262 single-seat night fighter, and a Ju-290 tanker are a couple that I have been thinking of. And the Navy B-58 does sound very interesting.

Tankerbuilder,
You're in! I cannot wait to see the Caroline build. It reminds me of Aristotle Onassis when he converted a destroyer into a pleasure yacht.

Glad to have you back! I've been running the Sea Hustler ideas through my head a lot, so I should be able to come up with something.

Thanks about the badge. That is my Spitfire whif I did last year. Anyone who would like to use , feel free to do so.

Only just discovered this one. I normally do at least one 'what-if' per year, so I'm almost certainly in. In the meantime, here's one I did earlier - the Supermarine Waddler.

Designed as luxury inter-ice-floe transport for everybody's favourite flightless seabird, it's obvioulsy based on the (RoG re-pop of the Matchbox 1/72) Supermarine Walrus:

I started by adding interior detail to the flight deck and nose angler's position:

creating a wood-panelled lounge bar:

and adding a couple of passengers (also a pilot, but you can't see him):

The lounge bar was glazed in with an Aeroclub vac-form 1/72 Tiger Moth enclosed canopy:

To be continued....

Cute and cuddly, boys, cute and cuddly!

I would like to play as well!!! Not sure what yet, been planning "something?" for a long time, but have a hard time choppin stuff up. This will give me the motivation for sure. I'm toying with the idea of turning a single into a twin (twin corsair perhaps, ie. f-82 twin-'stang). Whatever, it'll probably be 1/48 ww2.

Love this one, Chris.  The Penguin roundel is especially inspired.  Looking forward to what you will create for this What If group build.
