Thank you Tony. I really like Subs also. Last week I picked up AFV Club's I-19. A big boat by WWII standards, but quite complicated as well. After building all those modern boats it is akin to going from building delta wing jets to a WWI biplane...Hmm

I came back to these boards too late to really get going on this GB, but hopefully will participate if there is another. Awesome job on the subs Stikpusher. I love to build Sub models too.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Thanks Vetteman!Wink That big old gold "fan" screw sure does stand out on an otherwise dark finish. I am ready to tackle USS Chicago now... A Flight II boat with the VLS in the bow for missiles...Devil

Kermit welcome back to the forums, missed ya buddy. I hope you had a great vacation. You have been a great host and if you should decide to host round 2 I will offer up a Destroyer.

Ladies and Gentlemen....

With Stik's finishing up his impressive 1:350 fleet of underseas heavy metal, my coming home from the USA yesterday and suffering from a bad case of jetlag (it's 3 am as i write this...) it is now officially time to start the final post of this ASW Group build.

First of all let me say it has been both a privilege and an honor to be able to host this Group and it's collection of amazing work. I noticed that i am not the only one who is "into" submarine warfare and everything that involves this genreBig Smile

Next up will be me composing a gallery post of all your amazing work. To be able to do that is a reward all of it's own since it will surely evoke some memories of all that has happened during the course of this GB.

Your grateful and lucky host,

Richard

Here is a comparison shot. On the Kilo I used Humbrol clear flat for the top coat, on the Alfa, I used Gunze. I prefer the Humbrol finish.

The undersea fleet is growing...Captain

I really need one of those ultra fine white pens! Especially as I have more subs in the stash. Thanks for the tip on where to get one. I thought I had one, but unfortunately not. For the upper hulls I use Polly Scale "Sacle Black". Fresh out of the bottle it is a flat very dark gray. After a coat of future it gets darker and takes on a slight bluish hue. And as you can see from the Alfa and the Kilo I completed it does have a nice weathered black color after a flat top coat.

very nicely done... what color did you use to paint the upper hull?

On my last carrier, I used an artist's paint pen (from Michael's craft store), ultrafine tip. Not cheap (about 9-10$), but I like it better for small-ish white details and lines than dealing with decals. Also great to highlight IPs dials, etc.

cheers

I know this GB is closed, but I will continue to post my entries progress until all are completed :yup:

Today I completed the Alfa and applied the decals to the USS Dallas. Let's just say that after this kit I do not think too highly of Dragon Ship decals. I also applied decals from Airfix, Alanger, and Revell to other sub kits today and hands down, the Dragon ones were the most un cooperative. :slap:

I am also in either way... depends on the timeframe, either more of the subs currently on the queue, or (if I have the time), a modern (non-guided missile) destroyer, such as the Dragon AEMSS Arthur W Radford.

I found this page on WWII destroyer ASW tactics, sort of cool:

Well.... i guess i can do a second round...maybe 6 month running time this time.

Just thought that enthousiasm for such a group would be limited given the rather specialized subjectZip it! Would love to see a destroyer or two done though....

Do i hear interest for a round two?

Julez,

I am so sorry..... The (anti) sub groupbuild closed with Randy finishing his seahawk. I am currently in the USA on a holiday so i cannot make the gallery post at this moment. My sincere apologies for any misunderstanding.

However,....Wink

As i am also hosting the "Ostfront" GB the midget sub could very well be eligible for that GB..? I happen to know that germany operated at least a bunch of type II's in the Black sea. To me it seems very likely that they also operated midget subs for harbor operations and maybe even covert ops landings and the likes.... Just a wild guess.

Hope my compromise offer works for you?

Well I just could not get some of those darned hull markings to lay down right. So its a case of hand paining them on and touching up which I am in the middle of at this point. So if anyone out there will be building this ALPHA kit in the future take this bit of advice- Poke a hole with a pin thru the small white circle dots that will go over raised details on the hull to get the decals to lay down in the proper place. If you do that, setting solution and a touch of decal solvent should have no problem. Had I thought of that beforehand, this thing would have been done yesterday.

Jmart, your right about Bronco. Now if they could do a few older boats like the Foxtrot, Victor III, Charlie,  HMS Conqueror, and maybe a Sturgeon in 1/350 plastic. I know there are resin kits of some of those out there, but...

I also did some touch ups on USS Dallas today, so she is almost ready for completion as well.

Vetteman/Randy – Very nice Seahawk; all your extra work paid off on the final product. Very well done, I particularly like your work around the engine/blades area. Cheers!

Stikpusher – Nice job on the Kilo and Alfa; Bronco (and HobbyBoss) are doing a great job filling in the modern sub category at both 1:350 and 1:700 scales.

Andy – No worries mate; I do/did the same thing… “plan” my GBs then real life/work/health issues hit you on the side of the head. I am also a recent hobby-returnee: 3 years ago after 20 year hiatus! Sometimes I got overwhelmed with the amount of new techniques, materials, tools, references, etc. I just went back to basics; an old Tamiya armor built OOB, a Revell P-51, etc. And there is never a dearth of potential GBs in here! Cheers

..And thanks everyone for the comments. I hope 2011 leaves me more time for modeling and GBs !  I should have used anthracite grey instead of flat black (live, model and learn!); even NATO black maybe with a smidge of white mixed in. I like the foil/prop idea; with practice, good pair of small curved scissors (and a good set of eyes) you can mimic almost any shape. And cheaper than white metal or brass props!

Thanks to Kermit/Richard for hosting the GB! Beer

Catch up with guys on other GBs, off to finish my P-51s for the Official NMF GBII !

Been a while since I've been on here due to work and family commitments.  Still trying to get back into building but realised I was over-thinking it and trying to do it right/expertly rather than just jumping in and re-learning what I've forgotten as I go.  Have now secured a workspace of sorts so am keen to just get stuck-in.

Probably wise if I retire from the GBs I'm in as I'm not sure how fast I'll get any builds done.  Might just join GBs if my current project fits.

My planned Airfix 1/600 HMS Leander won't be happening for this GB, sorry.  That said, I hope to 're-join' if I can.

Love that Seahawk, Randy.

Looks good Stikpusher, my favorite time watching a sub build is the weathering. Hurry up an git-r-done man

Ok I am calling the Seahawk finished !!!

gotta show off a bit of scratched detail ya know so ....

Main rotor hydrolic lines not perfect but close enough to busy things up a little.

Cant really see what I did on the inside but those seat belts look good to me.
