Got the Thunderjet plugged up, ready for coats of gloss white, panels of blacks and grays.

I also masked the inside of the canopies. Fiddly work but worth it and sprayed the interior with cockpit green. This should look good with the gloss finish on the outside.

Cheers

Ok, Thunderjet gets gloss black coat (landing panels, gun bay panel, cockpit etc. get white gloss)

I wish all primer coats could be gloss black, it look so good!

I masked off some random panels and stuff and applied some lighter grays and shading on top and underneath;

When the Alclad is applied tomorrow the subtle variation in some panels should show through.

Casper you are becoming a detail madman !!! The pit looks fantastic along with the gun bay, and what you have done with the canopy is just the icing on the cake. The dials on the IP really catch my eye, I have tried cutting the dials from decals and have had ZERO luck doing it.  How did you do it ?

AlterEcho The engine looks very nice indeed, the plug wires help it out a bunch and really do show up on a Jug. I have a hard time of it adding plug wires to a 1/48 kit and here you go adding the4m to a 1/72 YesYes

CallSignOwl and Gamera how could we possibly forget the two of you I ask.

Sorry all that I haven't been around in a while, had a bit of a medical issue. Man I am getting tired of those things and hope this year will be better than last year was.  I haven't made any progress on the F-15 but with luck I will get some work done on it today. Have to fill gaps in the engine intakes and fix up the hole created when I removed the HUD.

Thanks Vetteman! The IP thing is really easy, you need one of these Micromark Hole Punch. This will usually take care of IP decals down to 1/72 scale. Then with a bit of patience using tweezers to dunk them, then dry them, use a toothpick to move the dial into place. It can tke up to 5 minutes to do one dial but it is worth it!

No doubt about it, Alclad is the way to go!

I found it was best to shut all of my curtains and rely on artificial light to ensure I have covered every surface. It really makes a huge difference with the gloss primed colour underneath. Next NMF bird I do I'll experiment more with this!

Next come the Olive drab nose and back of cockpit stripes, then Decals tomorrow.

Guys,

My T6 Texan has been neglected for a long time now and my last update has been ages ago. Time to do something about that...Smile.

Well.... my second attempt at foiling a plane failed.....miserably i might add... Restarted the foiling three times and wasn't happy at all about the results i got. So i tried to remove all of the foil after deciding i wanted to use paint for it. This didn't turn out to be so easy on several spots so i ended up with little scratches on the wings and part of the fuselage.

(these were taken just after sanding so it looks worse than it is due to the dust still being visible)

I think i have got a workable model now. Plan is to use a gap filling primer on it. Hopefully this will take care of all, if not most of the scratches....

Randy suggested in the PM's we exchange that if all else fails, i might still be able to use the model in an effort to build and weather a crashed/ shot down plane. I must say that this was a stroke of genious Randy!Yes. I really like the idea but i am going to attempt this first. I am really hopeful that i can still pull off a good save here...

Richard

YYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Decals! I hate 'em!

There are four of these blue/white arrows that have a meet in the middle design;

You can see it in the middle of the decal sheet. I am not applying this guy, no way! I applied 3 and found they didn't work. 2 came off no problems but the third did a flake job and dried. I am going to have to sand it back, re prime and re apply Alclad and complete the model without the fuselage and wing/droptank arrows. Everything on this build was going great guns to!

Well when finished the plane won't have 100% authentic markings but should look good none the less!

Cheers

Richard, Casper Ouch guys thats gotta hurtBroken Heart

Randy, I have some bad news buddy, i'm going to have to shunt the B-29 to NMF III i'm afraid...I've gone and ensnared myself in too many Gb's and i honestly don't think i'll get her done...Looking at my bench and realising that  i have 5 builds on the go kinda brought it home to me that i have to draw a line and be realistic...

But on the flipside young Tyler is going to be starting his P-51d in a couple of weeks and he has asked me if we can do our mustangs together, of course i said yes so i'm going to finish off the Biber and the 190's and drag my P-51 from the stash that i was saving for NMFIII, this one will have the Verlinden detail set and engine going in it and will be finished in RAAF markings.....Sorry to let you guys down, i know you were looking forward to the 29....

Casper will haffta save my nickles and get one of those punch sets for sure. I gotta say you do know how to lay down alclad paint looks nice and smooth. I like the shading effects you achieved too. Bummer about the decals but I am sure you will have it looking good at anyrate.

Kermit the T-6 doesn't look all that bad in the pictures and I have no worried that it wont be another FAMOUS Kermit save.

Julez no problem about the 29 I kinds figured it was getting a bit close to the end date to be starting a project like I think that one will be. So you want to swap it for the P-51 ? We will have a father son build going wayyyyyyyyy cool. Oh hey did Tyler finish the Stuka yet ?

Randy, thanks for understanding buddy...Tyler hasn't finished his Stuka yet but he's getting close and just needs to paint the uppersurface colours...The scheme he chose is the same as the one on the 190 you did with RLM 79 upper with RLM 80 spots, he won't be able to freehand the spots so i'm having him paint the green first and mask the spots with blutac before painting the 79 on....

I only have limited time with Tyler and his sisters, his mother and i divorced 5 years ago and i have the kids one week on and one week off, thankfully my current wife is very understanding and has no problem with "the boys" indulging in their hobby...

The engine and wings have been assembled and glued to the body. Now, I am working on the seams and attending to the details. Once that is done I will be spraying the primer for the Alclad finish.

Casper: Ack! Sorry to see your decal woes, the paint looks soooo good! I've complained before about Hasegawa decals, somehow I can never get them to work that well.

AlterEcho & Kermit: Great stuff guys, please keep the photos coming!

Sorry to hear about you dropping your B-29 Julez, I was hoping to see how your's would come out.

I did a little work on my B-29 this weekend. There are a few rough areas in the NM yet but they're all on the bottom of the plane and I'm thinking of just letting them slide instead of messing up something else while sanding them out and re-painting them. I masked off the 'greenhouse' nose and it's ready for painting. The Eduard pre-cut canopy masks are expensive but worth it. I can't imagine trying to cut fifty Censored pieces of tape to mask them the old-fashioned way.

Gamera,

No talk... we want pics!!Stick out tongueStick out tongueWink

Julez,

Bummer for you to have to postpone plans on the B29 but it is a big project and i know how you can get overexcited and take on too much commitment. But your current projects more than make up for it!

Well,... it's not flawless...lost some rivet detail that i tried to get back with some preshading and futured the primer to get more gap filling effect going. Then  i took out the alclad and my trusty airbrush....:

Quite happy with the finish myself even if i had to compromise here and there with losing some detail on the wings mostly. Hope you guys like it tooSmile

Richard

EDIT: oops, posted the same pic twice... its corrected now...Embarrassed

Thanks Julez.

Yeah, this is my first NMF and only the second model that I have ever assembled. The first model I ever built was a Hasegawa 109G6, last year. I followed a video along with the build and had a lot of fun...so much fun that I bought more supplies and a booth and desk. Then I bought a second airbrush and have been practicing with it ever since. I bought from estate sales and hobby stores various missing part kits to practice on and try different building techniques. Plus, I get a lot of techniques from the guys and girls on here. And from what I gather from here, I am trying to make the plane's surface as error free as possible. Anyway, here are some pics from my very first build (please excuse the desk and forgive me for posting these pics here. Also, the front windshield and canopy got knocked, so I am re-gluing that back...you gotta love grandchildren  Big Smile ).

Gamera yeah what Richard said we want pictures man. Julez like tghere are gonna be 2 B-29 builds going for round 2 Eats

Kermit now that is another slick froggie save my friend, looks to be a very smooth finish from where I am sitting. Actually I was thinking if I was to build another I would tone down the surface detail a bit for a NMF finish. It just seems to my eye to pop out at you too much, so your miss hap may have been a stroke of luck, or the work of the styrene gods. What markings are you goin with ?

AlterEcho you look to be well on the way to having a P-47 in your stable for sure. You say this is only your second build and the 109 pictured was your first ?? Man that 109 looks better than my tenth build. Very well done sir. YesYes

Ok I am gonna go off topic a bit here I guess, my sister and her son Kenny went to Michaels last weekend and Kenny informed his momma he wanted to get a model. Now this didnt tickle me at all, course I did get this story second hand mind you. Any he comes bouncing into my room all excited and yelling for help with his new model while bouncing up and down on my chest. Upon waking and askin him where the model is I am promptly told its on your bench. Well out to the mancave we go him tugging and pulling, of course I couldn't let him know I was more than willing to go with him. So we set down and open his new model, its a pine wood racer, I didnt know they even made those anymore. So I showed him how to sand, sand paper, paint and, stickers were all included now how cool is that I ask you. Anyway he sanded away until lunch was made for him so as he ate his lunch in the house with momma I finished the sanding for him. I tell ya for a 3 year old he did a pretty good job of it too. Now for paint, yes he did paint it all him own self, needed a little help with the stickers then a clear coat before nap time. Course I had to glue the parts on and push the wheels on, cause unlike paint, glue all over doesn't work very well. So without further longwindness from me heres a picture.

I know I know,  but the engine is chrome NMF, and the rollbar is black oxide, AND he does have good taste in models because it a Revell model Stick out tongue

Kinda makes my WIP pictures seem insignificant dont ya think ? Anyway here goes.

I found the fuse where the nose fits on was 1/16th smaller than the nose at the joint was so I gave it some thought and decided to cut off part of a chopstik, sand it to the correct length and wedge it into the fuse opening. Worked out perfectly too.

Heres the bottom with all the filling done before I added the nose and wings.

Now she looks like a jet

.

I hope to make a bunch of progress this week but we will see.

Echo, man you must be a quick study, your builds look like you have had years of experience, the 109 is very nice, i've built the Has 1/48 G series a few time now, lovely kitToast

Richard, Yeah overcommited is the word...A new GB starts off and i get a buzz for one kit but when i get halfway through it another GB starts up and i get a buzz for another kitTongue Tied

Your build is looking sweet, i'll have to do one of those trainers one day, their very attractive in a goofy sort of wayYes

Vette, Good on you man, i've found that there is nothing more gratifying than building with the young onesToast your nephews drag car is very coolCool

Yeah 2 1/48 B-29's in round IIIIndifferentOne with foil the other allcad, betcha i finish first, it'll take you 6 months to foil that beastWhistlingRound III is already shaping up to be a good one, after the 29 i'll drag out that Avon Sabre and maybe even a Verlinden 120mm Roman legionaire, i figure the segmentata armour should cover more than 30%...no doubt Richard will leave us in the dust and do another squadron of builds.....

Gamera, just one emoticon for ya.......Camera

...What markings are you goin with ?...

Randy,

For a while i was thinking about doing something yellow wing too or maybe even a more exotic AT6 like french or something but from all the sideviews i have seen i still like the X-524 as a finish offered by revell is the most eyecatching, short of doing an entire yellow one that isSmile There is something about the nose and tail that pops out with all those stripes...

Ofcourse i am well on my way of painting those.... just sprayed white on the cowling and tailfin... And decided to use the talon with the polishing powders for the landing gear, flaps and all the little stuffBig Smile

Jules,

A new year of lovely shiny things to build??Stick out tongueStick out tongue YesyesyesyesyesyesPropeller I am all for it!

Julez you aren't kidding that B-29 will take 2 rolls of foil at least Huh? I also want to do a B-25J in foil or maybe a P-61.

Richard I too really liked the X-524 markings, they are quite flashy in a pleasing way. Cant wait to see what you do with it. Oh careful of the decal for the cowl I have heard its a bear and doesn't fit very well especially where the cowl curves at the front. At the time I built mine I had my heart set on a yellow wing in markings like one that is based close by.

IndifferentA b29 in foil Randy??Indifferent

If you pull that one off, (and i am absolutely sure the folks at FSM would at least put that in the online gallery) i want to state, with everyone as my witness, that i will give you a bottle of your favorite beverage. That's a promise!

Really impressive and ambitious undertaking. I am already drewling just thinking about a model like thatWink

As for my own little trainer... well im working on it. Just pulled the masking off and this is what came from underneath. Slight retouching needed but it was worth the effort IMHO:

AlterEcho: Wow, sharp looking Bf-109. Do you mean your first model or your first serious model? If your first dang, you don't want to even imagine how bad my first ten models were.

V-Man: Great looking stuff, both you and your nephew! A F-15 that isn't grey will be cool.

Julez: Actually the B-29 ought to be easy to foil, not a lot of complex curves on the thing. It's just a big metal tube with flat slab wings and tail. The hardest part would probably be the curved areas on the nacelles. Still I'm using Alclad II on mine and have been very happy with the results.

Richard: LOVE the candy cane stripes!!!! They came out great as well as the NM on the plane herself.

Sorry for the lack of photos. I've been doing lawn work this week and my back is killing me so I haven't gotten much done. Hopefully will get some updates this weekend. Just for the heck of it here is a photos of the fuselage and the dog. Notice the B-29 is almost as long as the dog... Stick out tongue

Gamera,

Hmmm.... i wonder.... Is that B29 fuselage a reference for the size of the dog or is the dog a reference for the size of that fuselage?Propeller

Great looking finish though. Do you always paint before assembly? Doesn't that make you have to respray after gluing and sanding?

Anyways... Just dropped by to show you guys how the painting went....

All that is left is the little bits and bobs, decals and weathering...

Untill thenWink
