Eatthis that F-5 is a small jet isn't it LOL. Man each time I see this build I am impressed with how nice that black paint looks.

Well its time to do some house keeping for this group that I have neglected for far too long. So please check the front page for missed builds and such and let me know so I can close this group.

Okay, this will be just under the wire thanks to the extension.

First off, here are the intentionally-mismatched cones for the exhaust ( one from the podracer kit, the other from a 1:72 SR-71 that was destroyed in a move, and sorry but I don't know the correct technical term for this kind of feature ).  keeping with the pattern of experimenting, I used the Tamiya Burnt Blue and Burnt Red weathering powders.

And here she is!  Sludge done and cleaned up, and the odd bits added to the engines.

All that's left is the dullcote.  I'll post a pic after with the straight OOB of the Mystery Ship that's in the works.

Sorry it took so long to get back here.  This month ended up being busier than expected, but it looks like I'll be getting this done by the new deadline.

On to the WIP pics...

Added some more colors to the basic panels and details.  I decided on Tamiya's Titanium Gold for the RCS clusters, a combination of getting them to stand out a little bit and influence from the yellow often used on the ships in Trek.  The hull panels are FS Camo Gray for the base color with FS Flat Gull Gray and MM Rust scattered about.

I've also drybrushed some Tamiya Flat Aluminum to add a more worn and battered look to the spines and the nose/battering ram.

IMG_0161.jpg

In the lower corner you can see the first bit of the weathering with Tamiya powders.  Here's some more...

And the belly after done adding the powder-based weathering...

IMG_0161.jpg

And for the last part of this update, the "War Paint."

IMG_0161.jpg

IMG_0161.jpg

Still to go tonight is the sludge wash to bring out the panel lines.  Tomorrow the engines get sludged up as well, and then finishing touches on the battle damage.

Thanks Eatthis and Supressionfire your words do help out a bunch keeping ones mind in a good place at times like this, have had 3 heart attacks and 15 trips to the cath labs around here. Two trips in the last 2 weeks, bummer is it really cuts into my building time Stick out tongue.

Kugai I am really liking your build man loads of scratch work there, not to mention a very interesting subject especially when one is a SiFi fan

iv no idea what your building kugai but it dont half look good :)

mines not chrome its black lol

Thanks.  If you want a better idea, check out the movie "Serenity" when you're in the mood for something like a space western ( spaceships and six-shooters ), based on the short-lived series "Firefly."  The Reavers are one of the baddies in the setting.  Crazy SOBs that cobble together pieces of spaceships they pirate to go out hunting for more spare parts as well as people.  A slightly cleaned-up description is that if they catch you they'll kill you, skin you, and eat you, and if you're lucky they'll do it in that order.

My project is intended more as something that would fit in their fleet as a no-aftermarket kitbash and not any kind of replica of what's actually in the show.

As for the color confusion, your 6/5 posting looked like you'd painted it silver and I thought the later pics of the high gloss was polishing.  You know it's glossy enough when a close-up at a certain angle makes gloss black look like chrome finish reflecting a darkened room!

Don't apologise vetteman42, just get better!

A old friend out west racked up 10 heart attacks & 3 open heart surgeries over the years. At the young age of 86 he declined a 4th. Gone but not forgotten Hugh was one of the coolest people I had the pleasure to call my friend.Cowboy

That being said I am sure you have many miles to go on this journey called life. Toast

Next was the base color: FS Camouflage gray.

Starting colors for the engine are Tamiya Gun Metal and Metallic Gray.  I'm painting the I-Beams in Tamiya Flat Brown and will have to touch up in several places ( trying to keep things "in the lines" in undercuts etc is tricky ).

And some more detail added to the engines in Jet Exhaust and Tamiya Copper, again with touch-ups to be done.

That's about it for the pics for tonight, but I'll have more up here soon.

The next step was adding more details in the hull.  In addition to some more barbs, I did some battle damage with "heat effects" ( not mentioning details to avoid being called a "bad influence" on the young 'uns, even with a "do not attempt at home" disclaimer ) and added patches in sheet styrene over some of them.  The scorched look that will be lost with priming and painting will be added back with wash and powders.  I also added some I-beams and other styrene bits to add to the "strapped on" look of the engines as well as hide the putty.

Also, if you look just forward of the puttied seam  and below the aft I-beam im the lower pic, you'll see a couple of the RCS system thrusters I added.  Funny thing is, I added these on a whim and only after happened to catch that the Serenity has at least a couple that look about like these.

Primer was next.  I also painted some of the panels white and black to see if a preshading effect would work to add some texture and depth.  Unfortunately, an airbrush seems to be a must, the only way preshading seems likely to work with rattle-can spray is if you're using white.

More in a sec...

Okay, take 2 on this ( the computer ate my first attempt at a post ).

At long last, here's the WIP pics I promised!

The first bit of customizing was scribing panel lines on the bay doors before assembly and on the rest of the main body after subassemblies were put together.  Unfortunately, the glow-in-the-dark plastic didn't show this well in the pics so I'll jest let the lines become apparent as the project progresses.

After assembling the main body of the kit with the bay installed, I added the first "scratchbuilding" with some I-beams in the bay and styrene pieces labeled as having a "channel" cross section give the door interiors some detail.  While this leaves the interior sides a bit bare, there are some details there I hope can be made clearer with paint and wash later.

As far as "in-story" reasons for the bay, I had the idea that after the Reavers have finished off whoever is on the ship they ram, they can use the bay to capture any escape pods that might have thought they got away.

To give the ship that "flying harpoon" look as well as have something like the spiny bits we see on some Reaver ships, I added "barbs" to the nose cone and other parts of the ship.  I uysed more of the "channel" styrene to set the bases of these, and cut the barbs themselves from strip styrene.

Since this thing is supposed to be a spacegoing battering ram, I figured some extra I-beams and random raised plates would add detail to the nose and give it a more reinforced look.  The sail also has some "channel" pieces to add to the effect.

Next the engines from the Podracer.  I just stuck these into place with some Tamiya 2-part putty.  You can also see the nose cone in test-fit position with some of the barbs in place.

Apparently I'll have to split this up into multiple posts because of the pictures.  More in a sec...

Sorry to hear about the need for the hospital trip.  Take care of yourself with that and here's hoping your recovery goes well.

Thanks for the extension.  I definitely understand the delay on your end and have kept working on the project figuring even if I didn't get it done in time for the badge, at least I would have a fun little ship and some experience with adding more than my usual extra touches.

Still delayed here with the pics, but I should be able to get things sorted out soon.  When I do, there's gonna be a lot of them with the different steps of the WIP.  The extension will definitely come in handy, since my original estimate of this weekend looks like it's gong to turn into about another week.

Sorry about the confusion, vetteman.

My build is using almost all of the AMT "Interplanetary UFO Mystery Ship kit with some of the parts switched around to have the shuttle bay on the belly but the bridge tower pointing up, as well as some added parts from another kit and a few structural details added with evergreen styrene parts.  The goal is the look of a "Reaver" ship concept in line with the TV show "Firefly."

Added parts to make this a kitbash are the partially-assembled engines from the "Anakin's Podracer" kit.  The Evergreen styrene bits include I-beams and cut pieces of sheet plastic to make barbs akin ti the spines seen on some Reavers, and other cut sheep pieces to add a few raised-hullplate "patches" to add to the additional scribed plating details.  Battle damage will include blast marks and structural damage done with heating techniques and weathering powders.

I don't plan on using any decals.  Everything will be painted on or done with the powders.

The "in story" concept is a ship likely to only survive a couple of engagements and fitting the deranged minds of the Reavers.  Where the Reavers often use harpoons to capture their targets, this one is one big harpoon, ramming the target ( think "Daedalus attack" from Macross ) and the Reavers then board through the breach from a forward hatch, braving the risk of explosive decompression for the sake of their insane approach to "suppertime."

I should have WIP pics shortly.  I'm using a different computer than usual and have an extra step or 2 to deal with.

If you do approve the project and could give me a slight extension through the weekend, I'd definitely appreciate it.  Just the added time through Sunday night would be plenty to add the finishing touches I have in mind.

Thanks.

Kugai I do remember you asking if you could join up a while back, but I never got any of your build details. If you will give therm to me I will update the front page and since the build is ending on 7/1 I am more willing to extend the end date if you need the added time.

Sorry for the long absence.  Had one computer after another develop issues andwas effectively cut off for a while there.

While it delayed any chance to get WIP pics up, I didn't let those technical problems stop my work on the Reaver ship.  I'm getting caught up on a lot of computer stuff at the moment, but will get back with the pics asap.

Just a couple of things.  Sorry if I didn't make my intention to join apparent if the idea was approved, but I noticed my name and project weren't listed...

Also, I referred to the ship as the "Leif Ericsson" before from where I had glanced through and noticed that name in the story included with the kit instructions.  It's actually the "Yuri Gagarin."  ( yeah, the name's on the decals, but I planned on skipping using any and never looked at the sheet until I got the spare kit ). Either way, the podracer engines are added and the scratchbuilt bits are in place and she's in the painting phase now.
