Hey guys. Just got back from Reno, dumped my dusty stuff in the yard and took a shower. Uploaded the cameras and settled down with a frosty one to get caught up.

Eric, that's a wowser and you'll chuckle in a minute. I think your build is a gem , and at 1/48 fellas she's still a palm of the hand kit.

I have about 400 pictures, all kinds of stuff, so ask and I have it I'm sure.

My favorite Unlimited:

Biplane:

Did some shopping and picked up these two little kits, and how nice to do for this GB.

The Travel Air is a Thompson Trophy racer, and they are both the old Hawk kits from the 60's Eric; you are correct.

kg4kpg,

Thanks a million for your offer!! Really kind of you and for a minute or two i was very tempted to say yes. But i kinda got some idea's for a totally custom paintjob combining the colors for the Dutch and USA flags (red white and blue). Think Miss America....

Really appreciate the offer thoughYesYesYes

And for something else:

Took a moment to slap together an alternative badge... hope it's suitable.

Any requests, idea's... just write me a PM. Badges aren't that hard and/ or alot of work...

Richard

EDIT: oops forgot to add the badge image LOL.... corrected.

Bondoman  very nice picture of the Ghost and the little bipe, a great score too. I have the Hawk kits and have built the Testors kits. I think the Testors kits are retooled Hawk molds as they seem to be much better kits.

Kermit now you have me sitting in the edge of my seat waiting to see your build EatsEatsEats

Nice work on the badges too my friend.

Using this site as a primary source of info.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/29214057/The-Schneider-Cup-Racers

I'll build the R3C-2 as Cuddihy's aircraft, in the livery suggested in the Hawk kit. Race number 2. Blue over black, with brass wings and yellow wingtips.

I'm also building a 1:24 card model SM 72 on another site. That one is hard!

Kermit - Nice looking badge!

Mr. Bondo - Keep those pics coming... lovely stuff sir!

Mikey - My build will be 1/48 but I don't know what to put it down as because I will be using mostly spare stuff from the spares box. I will probably use an old Glencoe Albatros for the donor but it will be unrecognizable as such when all is done. I will call her the "Foster Special". How do you think I should list it? As a 1/48 Glencoe Albatros? That sounds good! Big Smile

Cool

Mikey - Mine should be under the biplane category. I'm going for a modern bipe... just using the Albatros as a carving piece. Yes

Bondoman- The prop blades on this bird gives me some great inspiration for the blades on TantrumIdea in the first round GB. One wild looking bipe!

Nice kits , good score. I have a Hallmark , Pioneers of Flight, ornament of the Curtiss racer. It's tiny, about a 3 inch wing span, but looks very cool. A very nice looking airplane.

Here's my second build, gentlemen. It's a card model of the Macchi M.C. 72, in 1/24, by Oron. I bought a box of 32 lb. matte photo paper and printed her out on the best HP inkjet printer I own in the firm. I have taken over one of the drafting tables, and set up a station to work on at lunch hours.

It's been a long time since I built a card model, like 35 years. But I think I have the skills.

WOW that will be nice Bill!!! When you said it was 1/24, I didn't realize it was a card model!! Looking forward to this one for sure!! I have some good drawings of her in an OLD Air Combat magazine, circa 78-79 I can scan and post?

First time ive seen a card model in a GB. Due to the nature of the model ill let the required race numbers slide this time Stick out tongue

Sorry, I should have asked. I'll do the Curtiss first anyhow. We'll call the SM 72 a side show.

I remember seeing some pictures of very early Golden Age racers during races without numbers on them.

Bondoman cant wait to see your card model Eats I have never seen one

This is true. Any idea what sorta time frame it was? I might take it on a case by case basis.

Ok, well ive made p my mind, im going to drop the race number rule. It will now be replaced with "Must be a race style aircraft" I think, maybe reword it a little. Lemme think about it.

Reason im changing this is it was said a little earlier that not all race planes have numbers. And during ww2 (maybe just after) 41sqn painted up a spitfire for racing without any race numbers. So im dropping the race number rule.

The Macchi MC (not SM) 72 was a racing seaplane built in 1931 to compete in the Schneider Cup. It was powered by a 24 cylinder V engine, which was two 12 cylinder engines facing each other and driving a counter-rotating prop through a system of concentric drive shafts that passed from a central gear case forward through the cylinder heads to the nose.

It never competed in the Schneider Cup because of mechanical teething problems-imagine!, but it became a record breaker. In 1934 Test Pilot Agello piloted the plane for an astounding average speed of 709 km/h (440 mph) over three passes. This was the aircraft speed record for five years, and remains to this day the record for propeller driven seaplanes. Rare Bear only went  90 mph faster (well, that's a lot).

Yeah the macchi's a beautiful bird, i was talkin about the race numbers though. Ive already popped her in your list under Golden age. Supermarine did one with a very similar design didnt they?

So can I still enter my Curtiss R3C even though mine didn't come with a number and I finished mine two days after the Air Racer GB announcement was posted?

They did, the Supermarine S.6, which also was scratched from the 1931 Schneider. My take on the race number on seaplane racers is that they fly one at a time over a marked distance, generally average of three runs, so ID isn't a factor.

I was amazed at Reno when the Formula 1's were racing. It's like watching nine mosquitos in a jar. Somehow the announcer pretty much kept it straight.
