Model Expo has a lot of ships and even better, they have kits of cannon and a limber in 1/16th scale. They are even on sale now. There are the Revell kits of the Alabama and the Kearsarge. There are kits of the Monitor and the Virginia made by somebody, I'm not sure who. There is a line of civil war ships for gaming that make up into nice models if you put only a little extra effort into them. I have the Parrott rifle and the limber that I've started. If it's okay, I would like to enter them.

Yeah, I figured a lot of folks would feel that way. Still, it's worth a shot.

Already 150 years? How time flies.
Lots of interesting things to build, but not sure how much is actually available in kit form.
Great topic! Pitfalls as you noted but a thing or two already come to mind.
Alrighty sports fans, I've got a GB proposal that is likely to take all of us out of our comfort zones (and is likely to be confounded by lack of kits, but that is a seperate issu).
April 12 - 13 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the shelling of Fort Sumter and the 'official' start to the American Civil War. Anyone interested in a Civil War GB? I'm thinking it would end up being mostly figures and maybe some arty pieces, or perhaps a Monitor or two....
Lemme know what ya think...
