"Farewell to Arms" GB
Posted by castelnuovo on Monday, January 31, 2011 1:00 AM

Gentlemen,

In the past, almost all of the models I have built, with few exception, and those were some 25 years ago, had some kind of weapon of death and distruction.

This GB would be about unarmed military wehicles. Any scale, any era, sea, land or air based, as long as it has no guns, bombs, missiles or anything that can kill, maim or distroy Sad.

If enough of you are interested, lets start in, say, 2 weeks, give or take . That will give you enough time to order of dig the kit out of your stash. I am also thinking to make it a short one, say 3 moths.

Show that you are men of peace, lay down your arms (I am not talking surender here, just to be clearSmile ) and join the unarmd GB.

If some creative soul could come up with a badge thet would be highly appreciated.Bow Down

Cheers...

I have just the kit planned to be modeled unarmed!

Tamiya's NEW 1/32 scale Spitfire in NMF with guns removed in a PR roll that flew around Canada in 1946.

I have many GB commitments on the go and feel shame for not getting to them all, extend the deadline (no pun intended) for a year and possibly I may sign up officially.

Hopefully a 'bump' to the main page will generate more interest as I like the theme.

Possibly posting suitable candidates will spark ideas!Idea

I do know Hetzers post war had their arms removed to be used a training vehicles. Another cool one is Jeeps used to evacuate wounded soldiers. I seen photographs with streachers fitted over the hood and rear of them.

Ya mean like a Red Cross? Wink

Here's a quick idea... I can tweak it up better with a little more work, just wanted to submit one quick...

S-Fire, there's more than just jeeps,too...  Medical units used a number of wheeled vehicles for ambulances, there are Medivac helicopters, like Bell 47s, UH-1s, UH-60s, and fixed-wing air-ambulances like the Storch and Ju 52, C-54, R4D, etc, hospital ships, M-113 ambulances, all kinds of stuff...

We did an ambulance GB a few years ago. Italeri has an ambulance jeep kit which is rather nice, which is what I built.

I suppose something like this would also work? Obviously this is too far along, but it is a WW2 US Navy fire engine I occasionally tinker with. It started out as the Tamiya LRDG truck.

I have a humvee ambulance and US Army fire truck far less along, I'd probably join in with one of those if a started build was ok.

Had a though about going somewhere else with this.. How about a police SWAT-type vehicle that's ex-military... I've seen photos of a number of diferent armored vehilces adapted for LEA use, but un-armed...

A past issue of FSM's 'Great Scale Modeling' Shows a post war US Half track converted to a snow plow by the CNR  (Canadian National Railway) The modeler did a excellent job on the weathering and included a figure in surplus military clothes.

I have seen in the Yukon & British Columbia Sherman tanks converted & lengthened to be used as hill top anchor posts for steep terrain logging operations. They look like 'Sherman meets a sail ship' as the masts are huge! Regret taking reference photographs. I recall one was painted red though.

Hans, thaks for your effort with the badge, but I am not sure about it. It makes the GB look like medevac GB. I plan to build a kubelwagen from Afrika Korps, nothing red cross about it, just a beat up dessert wehicle.

But I like the idea of adding ex army  wehicles converted to police use. Why not, as long as they are unurmed. Water cannons are kind of a great area, eh Whistling ?

I know, just throwing one out there with the intent of just getting the creative juices flowing... iIgot a couple other ideas, will put them up in a little while..

Heh, I'm the LAST guy that'll go "Alan Alda" on anyone, lol..

Regarding the Logging rig, it's called a "Yarder"... The History Channel's series "Ax-Men", shows one of the yarders built on a Sherman chasis.. No mistaking that old Sherman running gear, lol.. I think it's the Pihl team using that yarder, although J.M. Browning could be too.. Not sure though, although I DO know it's not what the Rygaard team has..   Rygaard is using a rig from West Coast Heavy Equipment called a " Mobile Tower" and it's built on what looks like a D-9 Cat...

Gotta check my refs to be exact, but I think NASA flew a couple of the Blackbirds too... That makes them civilian aircraft for sure..  I've got a ref that shows the tail numbers and the markings for ALL the Sr-71/YF-12 birds, and where they were assigned, when, and their ultimate fate..

Stumbled across this Cobra, now working for the US Forest Service..

And another one with distinctly un-military appearance..

Good finds Hammer!

For fans of Canadian units Search & Rescue used surplus Langcaster bombers post WWII. They were stripped to NMF with bright orange tail & wing tips.

Now in concept, the mild mannered C-17 and other such aircraft like the C-47, C-119, C-130 and C-141 should qualify for this GB...

But do their contents?

Hans, I love that badge!!!! If others agree it will be the official badge of the GB.

Stickpusher, C-17, blackbird etc all qualify. Remember, army vehicles that are not armed are all go. Fell free to put soldiers armed to teeth on or in them as long as the vehicle itself has no built on guns, missiles etc. I will go with kubelwagen myself.

I am hoping to get at least 10 participants for the GB to make it happen, what do you guys think?

I like the idea, if the primary consideration is unarmed military equipment I'm sure I can come up with something appropriate.
