A Kit In Itself Group Build - 2011-2012
Posted by DoogsATX on Sunday, March 6, 2011 6:31 PM

A group build dedicated to those intricate subassemblies that reviews always refer to as "practically a kit in itself".

Think of it as a nice break from those long, involved builds, and also as something of a reference for all of us trying to get a better feel for X kit or Y aftermarket set.

Eligible entries are somewhat along an "I'll know it when I see it" basis, but definitely include the following:

  • Subassemblies of any kit with 10 or more pieces
  • "Sub-kits" included with larger kits. Think the vehicles included with some Tamiya aircraft, etc.
  • Aftermarket of a specific item. For example, a Vector engine or Aires gun bay.

This group build will run from March 2011 - February 2012, more or less. The plan is to keep it exceedingly casual, have fun, and share those bits that separate one kit from another!

On the Bench: 1/32 Trumpeter P-47 | 1/32 Hasegawa Bf 109G | 1/144 Eduard MiG-21MF x2

To kick things off...here's the Tasca M2 Browning.

I found the .50 cal included with the AFV Club Achilles somewhat wanting, and decided to punch it up with one of these.

The "kit" actually contains four sprues - enough for two guns and mounts - but I only the need one this time around.

On the sprues, the detail look fantastic. Check out the ammo belt!

My favorite detail is the way the main gun is molded/attached. If you check out the above pics, it looks like it's part of the sprue tree, but viola, it just pops off! It's not actually attached to anything. The cooling jacket just slides over a piece of sprue and that's it.

Doogs, sign me up with a pair of Vector R2800c engines in 1/48, i'll have to modify the Vector engines to make them appear as R3350s

Sweet! I've got one Vector in the stash (for Monogram's OS2U), but I've never built one up, so I'll be watching with interest.

Assuming these bad boys are intended for a B-29?

Doogs, you can count me in on this one. I'll be building a 1/32 Geared Hispano-Suiza / Wolseley engine with a ton of scratchbuilt goodies added to it! Yes

Doogs-

For the roster, I'll be doing the crane from Hobby Boss' 1/35 AAVR-7A1 recovery vehicle.

You're right, your Ma Deuce looks like a little gem.....

Yeah they sure are, a company called Engines and things do make Resin R3350's but the quality IMO is just not in the same league as Vector, Aires ect.....the R2880c series is a very close match, i will have to modify the hub and maybe shorten the cylinders a little....

Mike, looking forward to seeing a detailed build up of your engine, the one you did for the Pfalz was outstanding.....

Thanks Jules! Here's a shot of the parts. Not quite as many as the Pfalz engine, but it should be a fun project....

Only 17 kit parts, but there'll be some scratchbuilding involved as well.

I'm just as pumped to see how you modify those R2800's. Yes

Doogs, I think you may have missed a few entries. They were posted on the 'feeler' thread you started.

Indeed there have - I know I've been dealing with a sick kid, work being crazy, that sort of thing.

Got the M2 all assembled last night though! Didn't snap any pics last night, but will be sure to get some today. It's a sweet little build. Only qualm was a slightly loose barrel/body connection that made alignment a nightmare.

The Tasca M2 more or less complete. Still have a touch of weathering to do, but that's waiting until the rest of the Achilles gets it, too.

Overall, this is a sweet little kit and a worthwhile addition to any allied armor that packed the Ma Deuce.

Hi Doogs, I'm adding the Aires engines set to my upcoming Dornier 335A for the Way Too Many Props build. I'd like to include the build for these in this GB

With 54 resin casting blocks and 50 PE pieces I've got my work cut out for me.

Cheers

On the bench: A-4F 1/32 Hasegawa

Just deployed: F6F-5N Hellcat Nightfighter 1/48 Eduard

Up next: A6-E Intruder 1/48 Revell
