Long Gone Classic Companies GB 1st Jan 2012 to 1st May 2012
Posted by Centhot on Monday, October 10, 2011 4:41 PM

The Airfix GB, and it's range of classics, has lead me thinking to other classics, in this instance, companies who are sadly no longer with us (although often the molds still are).  Some produced some wonderful kits in their time, such as Matchbox, Esci, Frog, etc.  Often they had kits of subjects which have yet to be re-produced by any mainstream producer, such as the Matchbox Buckeye, or the Frog Shackleton; or they change the face of modelling, with the Esci 1/72 tank range.  I'm including in this GB name changes, such as KP, which is now Kopro.

Bearing in mind the simplicity of the kits, I'm keeping the GB short, but don't worry if you need longer to complete!

Rules:

  • Any scale, any era, any type (tanks, aircraft, ships, etc)
  • Out of box or as much AM sets that will fit into the aircraft
  • The box must be of the name of the company in question (so, the Revell re-issue of the Matchbox Buckeye, for example, is not included, but a Matchbox re-issue, even if it's when Revell owned the name, is OK)
  • Builds less than 50% are allowed
  • Crossovers welcome
  • Post Pics of progress is a must
  • Conversions allowed if documented example exists, but must still fit the rules.
  • What if's are allowed, but they must be substantially the same kit

This is my first GB since signing up, so, go easy on me!  Please host the badge yourself, as per usual.  It will be available for display once the kit is at least 50% completed.

  • Bish - Matchbox 1/72 Chinook
  • Bondoman - ?
  • Centhot - FROG 1/72 DH.Hornet
  • Checkmateking02 - ?
  • Dostacos - Esci 1/48 HS.129B
  • Duster - Matchbox 1/72 Boeing P-12
  • lewbud -  ?
  • NeedBeer - Esci C-47, and something else?
  • P-38JL - Esci 1/48 HS-129
  • Red Corvette - Matchbox 1/72 HE-111
  • STFD637 - Esci 1/72 F-5A
  • Tel Afar Dave - Esci-Ertl1/48 A-4E Skyhawk
  • TREYZX10R - Esci 1/48 HS-129
  • VanceCrozier - Esci 1/48 HS-129

Here's a list of qualifying (so far) companies.  More may be added!

  • Aurora (bought up by Monogram)
  • Crown
  • Esci
  • Esci Ertl
  • FROG
  • Hawk
  • JB Models (bought up by Airfix)
  • Matchbox (bought up by Revell)
  • Merit
  • Novo
  • Otaki
  • Pioneer 2 (kits now produced by PM Models, who I believe produced them for Pioneer 2)
  • Renwall
  • VEB Plasticart

Classic Airframes have suspended operations, but are not out of business or sold.  As they intend to carry on releasing new kits in the future, they're still a viable company.

MPC - I believe so, I certainly haven't seen any plastic kits from them in ages.

I'm in, very likely my ESCI 1/48 Henschel 129.

On the bench: Airfix 1/72 Wildcat; Airfix 1/72 Vampire T11; Airfix 1/72 Fouga Magister

Welcome on board P38, Checkmateking, and Vance!  I look forward to seeing your builds.  Be nice to see those old Esci kits being builtt too.  I do rather like them, I wonder what happened to the molds?  Italeri?

I'll add you to the front page

ARII is an old japanese brand; I thought they had gone under, and would qualify for this GB. I found the following info:

ARII is better known as Microace now and they concentrate on model trains; some of the plastic stuff had been re-released by EIDAI also long gone. I am not 100% if they are truly "long gone".

I have some of their old 1:700 modern sub series. BTW, if you want 1:700 scale modern sub, do NOT get old ARII kits. The new HobbyBoss kits are cheaper, crisper and more accurate.

Does anyone know if ARII is still a viable company or "Long Gone"?

I believe Arii is gone, the molds have passed on.  The 1/144 are now Minicraft, and I know that two 1/48 Airfix kits are ex-Arii (not sure who has the molds though).  However, I believe the Arii 1/144 came from LS and Crown, both also now gone.

Even if Arii have renamed themselves, the old brand has gone, and so is included.

Welcome on board!  Will you be joining us?

Sorry, but Arii still exsist: http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljlist?Maker1=ARI&cl=1

One wich doesn´t: VEB Plasticart. Ex East German company. Few molds went to Revell and left went to different eastern European companies. And then there´s lots of small eastern European companies what doesn´t exist anymore.

Revell has released the Plastikart Junkers G 24. It's a great model!

The Frog Shackleton was reboxed by MPC some while back, I've got one and it's a good kit too.

I've got a Matchbox PB4-Y Privateer, cast in dark blue, light blue and white. I'd enter it, but the time span is way too short. Can we start early? I'd guess so, since partial builds are allowed...

Yes, that's fine.  I pushed the start date back due to requests, but if you want to start your kit early and enter it in when 50% done, that's fine too, just, the official start isn't for 2 months.

Thanks for the info! I did a tad more reading, seems that their armor/dio line in 1/76 is the one long gone, but they are still active with ship releases. Cheers

Well, if that brand isn't producing kits, then, it's in!

well Bandai still makes Gundam kits so they are OUT, Aurora was sold to Monogram so I would guess that they should be ok along with old pure Monogram, Renwal  also seems to be toast

unless our fearless leaders says no......

I did a google search to see if Monogram is still around; appears not as its own label/brand.  You have to go to Revell's website to find any Monogram.  It appears the current label is "Revell-Monogram."

Here's what I've got anyway, so either one is fine.  I was just planning on doing the Monogram one first, since it represents an earlier version of the B-26.  The kit doesn't even have gun blisters, and I thought I'd have to scratch them somehow, until I found the aftermarket set from Hannants in London.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

I've had 'em so long, I don't even know when or where I got them.  They've been kicking around cuz I wanted to build them in 8th AAF markings, before the medium bombers were sent to the 9th AAF.  Problem was (and is) no dedicated decals for them.

So, "fearless leader," I can go with either one and be happy--unless, of course, a disaster occurs in the midst of building.  Thanks.

Hi

My recent acquisitions from a collection include Frog, Otaki, ARII, Matchbox kits - do these qualify?

The ARII is a Ki-44 Shoki 1/48 , the Otaki a Raiden Jack 1/48 - both intended for the Jap GB - can one build qualify for two GB's? if so include me with these two

I also have old MPM & ICM kits - are these co's still around?

Am in the market for an ESCI 1/48 MB326 - Impala for Africa build

Forgot this one - Here's my ESCI  AC-47 Spooky Gunship

Might have done more than 50% here - what do you think?

Camo Painting, sub-assemblies,gloss coat, decals, wash, last minute "stick ons" & dullcoat still to do - this generally takes longer to do than what I've done so far (3-4 hours)

Its been on the back burner for a while now so waiting another couple of months no big deal - three other GB's to cope with

OK, Arii is still around, although producing different kits, so, no.  Otaki is in, as unless someone knows otherwise, they're out of business, like Crown.  Classic Airframes are showing as new kits in the Hannants catalog.  Apparently, they are in business, just not releasing any new kits for a while.  Monogram I had a think about, and, although they're now Revell-Monogram, the name still appears and company, whilst merged, is still extant, so Monogram is out.

MPM and ICM are most certainly still in business!  I've recent new purchases from both.

The Dakota is a little further along than I'd have liked, but throw in another kit, and be glad to have both on board!

Yes, I see where CA is not offically "out of business" but is on idle.  I do have an Otaki in the stash and may give it a go, will know later.

OK Reasoned, looking forward to your choices.

Needbeer - oh, magical!  I'm really looking forward to this GB, and especially those 3!  You don't see Tornados and Jaguars that much, especially Tornados.  Matchbox tends to go together well, just with less detail.
