Cactus Air Force Group Build Feeler
Posted by jbrady on Sunday, November 27, 2011 12:37 PM

Anyone interested in participating in a GB featuring the aircraft of the Cactus Air Force? Any aircraft flying from Henderson field from August 1942 to January 1943. You have the usual suspects F4F, SBD, P38/400 and TBF. There are some interesting others like the PBY Catalina, Grumman Goose, B17, Lockheed Hudson, P70, and the C47.

To run from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012.

What about the P-400  Aerocobra?

They were used for parimeter defense.

Dropped depth charges around airfield the wrapped with chains, wiped out complete enemy batallions.

Yeah... I got it down as the P38/400 should read P39/400 both variants were used the the P400 was the most prevalent in the time period.

My Uncle John would get a kick out of this build... He flew a P-400 from the 'Canal...

This be him...

Love the Rooster. Do you have anymore pics of the plane? Got one in the stash, love to build it up.

That's been the problem, I don't have any pictures of his aircraft, since they flew whatever Airacobra was serviceable that day...  The original Monogram P-39 kit contains the markings for the 67th FS though, and one of the planes he flew was #13, the one named "Hell's Bells"...

However, there's a couple rather dark photos of 67th FS 'Cobras on the Cactus AF site:

That site is also rife with photos of Navy and Marine birds of the CAF..

Got that site bookmarked. Going to use the pics as reference when I get around to the p400. I used that site as reference when I did this one.

I've got a new reference, starting tomorrow, BTW... Since he's gotta move out of the Soldier's Home while some asbestos abatement is being done, Uncle John's staying with me for a few weeks!

So I figure I gotta helluva reference for the P-400, lol...
