The Official 1942 70th Anniversary Group Build

And now, halfway into 2013, I am calling this build done. Monogram's 1/48 TBD-1 done up in the markings of Torpedo Squadron 5 off USS Yorktown in May 1942 at the Battle of the Coral Sea.

Well here are the final "in progress" photos before I take the completed photos in a little while here...

antenna wire added using a strand of my middle daughter's hair, and super glue for the insulators

the only close up that came out was this one of the lead wire

I scratch built a folding strut brace arm for this access panel from strip styrene

and added a bit of thin rod styrene to simulate a piano door hinge for this access panel. this is pure SWAG on my part, as I could find no photo reference as to how this panel actually opens, but this makes sense to me...

and glued in place- the forward opening front panel is accurate- I did find a photo depicting that

Thank you sir. I am glad to hear that you like it. I had a few speed bumps yesterday in the afternoon with the antenna wire, but I was able to overcome them a couple hours later. I switch from stetched sprue to human hair on that task, and the hair gave the strength and look I needed. Many thanks to my middle daughter for that stand. Then in earlt evening I was able to get some insulators applied, and a couple more fiddly bits added to complete my day's goals on this build. I will get pics of that progress up here soon, and then get the final bits done here by the midday.

That TBD is incredible! The level of detail and weathering is blowing my mind.

Bronze isn't easy to come by.  Floquil used to make it in their RR colors, but I've read that Testors discontinued it when they took over.  Humbrol has a couple of different shades of bronze, so I'll have to try there.

I looked back on this thread and saw that I used Humbrol "Brass" for the torpedo body. It's a nice deep rich shade.

today's progress:

canopy hood guides scratch built from filed to shape sprue and installed (still need to paint them)

and antenna mast and torpedo sight scope installed

Most fiddly bits painted/touched up... still need to put a drop of clear glue for the torpedo sight lens

canopy masking removed and wingtip lights painted w/Tamiya clear Red & Green

and fixed and flexible .30 cals installed

The torpedo warhead is light gray, but I used a Humbrol's version of it for that part. Plus no weathering wash to alter the color, only the top Matt coat which lightened it up a tad bit...

Is the nose of the torpedo white or gray?  It looks different from the gray undersurface.

Thank you sir. Based on color photos that I could find, early war torpedo's had a brass/bronze body and light gray warhead. The wooden protective box around the fins was natural wood.

Well I painted up and installed the retained cables. I think they look pretty good.

Nice looking Devastator, Stik.  I have the 1/72 Airfix offering, and was wondering what to paint the torpedo.  Good work in all respects.

torpedo retained cables scratch built

holes drilled in bomb racks for torpedo retainer cables

engine exhausts & exhaust collector ring painted

propellor & shaft added to engine

landing gear oleos and brake lines painted, torpedo and main gear wheels glued in place

Thanks... those dang corrugations just take perserverence and needle files ;-)

I admire anyone who can handle the corrugations on the leading edge of the wings!

Ok, almost 6 months past due, but it will get done... today I pulled my TBD off of the sidelines and resumed work. Washes and drybrushed highlights. In the next couple days I should get the Matt top coat on... unfortunately during all the handling for finishing, the wing hinges gave out, so they will be fixed in the folded position.

Ninetalis, I know you're waiting on future, is anybody else still wrapping up a project for this?

Hey guys, If you go back to page 36   I've redone my photos using a white background. 

I think the black was absorbing too much light?  Also enabled the flash, but did place a section of tissue over it so when it engaged it wouldn't create too stark of an appearance.  Let me know if you notice a difference.  To me they do look sharper.

And I agree, this model is just perfect for training how to 'wash' an aircraft, it is stacked with recessed 'rivets' so it would be perfect.
I have some panel line accent color so no problem about stuff to wash it, just need some future.

Ninetalis, if Budd can send you some Future, should also send an extension (or at least ask for one?).  It's a sound build you have there, but adding that wash would enhance the details.  

I am Budd and I approve this message....er, what I mean is yes, I think a good build is worth an extension. Just ask VanceCrozier, I have had to have a couple of them myself...

Sharp indeed! Almost fresh out of the factory! I jest of course... but perhaps this is almost a more realistic approach to modeling, saying it's done and then weathering later after it's been "in the field" for a while...  That sounded better in my head than it does on here. Don't judge me, I'm tired. Some of us celebrated a new year last night.

In all seriousness, if you need some Future, I can send you some. I think I even have a spare bottle.

I've finished the Nate a while back, I'm just waiting for a bottle of Future so I can spray that on my model and wash it. But getting Future in Belgium isn't easy. So I'm gonna post this guy as finished.
