the real red baron

The mustang is not beautiful to me, it's just all show no go. A show pony, all it had going for it was speed and range.

Oh, man, having flown in one and handled the stick a bit, I can't get my head around that one....

Hi!

I think this one will qualify to the criteria: http://karopka.ru/upload/iblock/326/photo_1_1312252545.JPG

So if the building time is long enough I´m in Propeller

And therein lies the trap with the whole concept....

Yes and No. While beauty (and ugly) are in the eye of the beholder, I think we can all realize what are generally considered "ugly" planes. For instance, I think that the P-61 and A-10, both traditionally ugly planes, have a certain brute beauty to them. Whereas, the P-51 and F-16, both tradionally pretty planes, I think look kind of awkward, with their gaping air scoops and bulbous canopies. That's just me, though, and I accept it. It's no different than guys who like girls with a little meat on them, but realize that they won't be winning a beauty contest anytime soon.

And for that matter, if I recall correctly, doesn't the ugly duckling become a beautiful swan in the end, or some BS like that?

I'd almost think most of the Russian jets pre-Flanker and -Fulcrum could count on the "utilitarian" criteria, and some of them were pretty odd.

But when it comes to what I see as "ugly", I can't think of anyone who pulled that off better than the Brits with some of their planes.

Fascinating idea.... I can't commit right now until I see what my work will be like this year. I am getting a 1/72 Soviet Beagle bomber for Christmas. Strange looking bird, but Soviet+bomber=awesome so it got put on the list. I will keep this on my radar!

I recently picked up the Airmodel 1/72 Vacuform F8U-3 Crusader .

The overall shape and look of this bird is a far cry from the classic lines of the F-8 Crusader ...

I also bought Airmodels F8U-1T (TF-8A) "Crewsader/Twosader" and the TF-102 Delta Dart , although these two also look a little odd , I don't think it beats out the F8U-3 !

Ugly Duckling group build feeler

Hey all, with the new year rapidly approaching I wanted to bounce an idea off of you and test the waters on a possible "Ugly Duckling" group build.  The criteria would be to delve into your stash and pull out the one kit that will not win any beauty contests.  I'm not looking for Mustangs, Spits and F-16s here.  This will be a group build a tribute to the utilitarian, purpose-built, function over form aircraft.

For example, the kit I'm eying would be Hobby Boss' F3H Demon.  Everything on it just looks wrong.  Like it was cobbled together from multiple planes and held together by sheer will.

Now I get that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that this is a very subjective build, so I will leave it up to you to decide if your choice is an ugly duckling or not.

OOB or AMS, any scale, manufacturer, cross overs welcome if less than 50% complete

Something else to consider, I'm pretty new to this forum, all things considered, and have never hosted a group build.  Any help you vets can provide would be appreciated.
